Re: Bass wood vs sitka or Doug Fir
Brian, Since Basswood is both lighter and less strong you could, in theory, increase the longeron dimensions to, say, 1.25 inches square and achieve the same weight and strength os spruce. Oscar might suggest the correct dimensions to achieve spruce parity. Also, look at Western Hemlock as an altern...

Re: Bending Strips for Ribs
I used a 4 foot section of metal downspout, standing on end, on top of a pressure cooker with the pressure weigh off. Add cap strips and seal with a rag around the top. 30-40 minutes of steam works great. Just get the hot, steamed cap strips in the jig pronto. The heat seems more effective than soak...

Re: Routing Willy Nilly
I routed my Western Hemlock wing spars and saved weigh with little strength penalty. I’d be cautious routing in the aft fuselage as a hard landing could really stress the routed parts back there.

Re: Old Information for New Pietenpol Pilots
Cpirrman,
I recently strung my drag/anti drag wires in the wings. My EAA Tech Counsilor, the venerable Ernie Moreno, advised me that the tension should be 60 lbs. I borrowed a cable tensioner to get exactly that value on each wire. It was easy too. Hope this helps. Vincent Dunn.

Re: Laced Wheels
Here's an email from Buchanans Spoke and Rim from June 2018. I had emailed them to ask about what size the spoke holes should be. They're really helpful and did a fantastic job lacing the rims I bought online to the hubs I had made to order. Hi Vincent. The 9 gauge wire is .142" in diameter but...
