Re: Empannage ready for prime (again)

I have the empennage mostly primed and I am not quite ready to give the Graco a glowing report yet. However it does work pretty good. The only issue I have with it is some drips that end up needing to be brushed out. That could be a result of makeshift paint booth being too small though to. It does ...

Foam Brushes.....

So I am applying the EkoFill (Stewart System) primer to the tail feathers and the foam brushes are leaving behind some debris that is not helpful.

Anyone have a recommendation on a high quality foam brush. I know this is an oxymoron.... Good disposable foam brush....

Have a great week everyone!

Empannage ready for prime (again)

Hey folks I have the empannage ready for primer. I am using the Stewart System so that I'd EkoFill.

I have a paint booth set up and I will be using a Graco cordless sprayer. Really hoping that this is the finished product.

I am not surprised, not in the least. Nothing that I have done on this project has been successful on the first go. So the covering oft the empennage was no different. Re: Wing Finishing Advice

I followed the folks in California and a fella in Australia and of course Tony Bingelis EAA books... It is a box spar of the "C" variety. The gussetes you mention are biscuit joints. I use them in early construction layup. It is an internal gusset. I have used them in most of the construction. I app...

Re: Wing Finishing Advice

Here is a photograph of the flocked ribs. Herb Rose is the builder who recommended I do this. It worked great. I mixed some cotton flock with the glue and worked it under the colstrip with a putty knife. Then made a 45 degree fitting on each side. It really stiffened it all up.

Re: Sitka Spruce

I got all the sitka for my plane in Madison Wisconsin at McCormicks Lumber. https://mccormicklumber.com/ They only sell by the whole board. Usually 5 quarter and 9 - 12" wide, 18 - 24 foot long. The last one I bought there had a nasty split so they let me only buy the good part which was about 8 foo...

Has anyone covered a Pietenpol with the HIPEC Covering System?

I am getting very close to choosing the system that I am going with.

I have searched through the forums and I have not seen a lot of info on it.

Wing Finishing Advice

Hey Folks, I am seeking some advice on finishing my wings. What kind of material should I use on the leading edge? I have heard of a poster board and thin plywood. Also I have heard that you should put flax where the rib meets the spar. Can someone please elaborate on that? Thanks in advance Dave

This is a horrible mess.... none of these are airplane parts. Just me trying to figure out how to make the part and work on my welding skills....

The best I got to is a backwards L that I flat weld in place.

This is one of those deceivingly "simple" parts that take an enormous amount of time. I have a pretty good prototype and 5 scrap parts..... Welding the thin 4130 is above my skill. But I have found a workable design that I can make. The bolt does not need to welded in place. You will have to tempora...

Re: Have Wing Stand, Will Travel....

This fine fella in Louisiana donated a Pietenpol that he built to BPA. A couple of buddies and I drove a U-Haul from Wisconsin to Louisiana and loaded the plane up and hauled it back.

Look for details in a newsletter. Come to Brodhead this summer and see the plane on display.

I have remade the fittings a couple of times and I would recommend that you extend the ends of them a bit. Getting the clevis pin into the shackle takes some space. Especially after the covering is installed.
