Re: Trailering a Piet

I used a 5X9 uhaul this summer to trailer a fuselage, tail feathers and landing gear I purchased from an old friend. I trailered it from Indiana to central WI to New Orleans with zero issues. I wrapped it in plastic and it fared very well. If I had to transport wings as well enclosed would have been...

Re: Photo update from my airplane factory

Mine is a little small...lets just say I'm building the smaller parts first. Wing ribs and dissembled tail sections in the corner of the bedroom is normal...right?

Re: Where to start...

Buzz- I concur, I started about two years ago and have finished the ribs, all tail surfaces and am working on the center section of a three piece wing. I have two corvairs I've pulled apart for a motor. All of this done on a small workbench in a small shed (see Pic). Ribs first is a great way to tes...

Re: Control Surface Rigging

I find it interesting that the LAA refers the Bingelis books as references for their inspectors, there's some comfort in that. "Refer to Bingelis’s books ‘Firewall Forward’, ‘The Sportplane Builder’ and ‘Sportplane Construction Techniques’ for examples of standard aviation practises. If in doub...

Re: Instrument Panel

Looks great Dan, solid plan. As you gain hours as a student make mental notes on how you personally scan and what is most comfortable and natural for you and arrange the instruments to conform to you vise you having to conform to the aircraft. I really like your layout... also bold move actually sho...

I tried to order a set from Doc about a year ago and just never heard anything. I ended up ordering through the Pietenpol family site. Very helpful. I emailed him once or twice with questions and received prompt helpful responses.

Re: offset vertical fin

So that's the leading edge displaced 5/8 to the left correct? Have you ever felt that was not quite the right setting or that you wish you could adjust it (not in flight)? How is it in flight? Kinda spoilt about having a nice trimmed out aircraft.

Re: offset vertical fin

Has anybody explored the idea of using the stacked washer idea for the front attachment point to allow lateral adjustment and... here we go... for the rear attach point instead of the two brackets on the outside of the vert stab as shown in the plans, as far back as possible, drive a single vertical...

Re: Tail Wheel weight consideration?

Thanks, not sure which I'll end up using... a ways to go yet. Gary has been a great resource and love the look of his plane. I've been busy cleaning up some beautiful cast tail hinges. They worked out perfectly, thanks Oscar!

Tail Wheel weight consideration?

I recently picked up a nice antique Scot 3-24B that was priced right and cleaned up really nice. My big concern with installing it on my Piet is the is the weight. 5lbs 6 oz seems a lot to hoist up on that moment arm. Any thoughts are welcome. I'm still pretty new to the homebuilding world and not t...

Re: Metal Fittings

I was looking to learn autocad so I could draw, view and edit the drawings of the steel parts myself. I chose Solidworks. I was able to view, draw, edit, create... Solidworks on your own is VERY expensive, but as an EAA member you can download it FOR FREE!!! In the immortal words "works great l...

Re: Tail Feathers Confusion

After pondering, smoking a pipe (tobacco), and mulling it over a nice neat bourbon, I realized the rest of the entire main beam trailing edge has that same narrowish edge, just because there is a gusset plate beneath this portion it shouldn't be any issue. I guess I was concerned with the fabric vib...

Re: Tail Feathers Confusion

OK, I'm pretty happy with my horizontal stabilizer....all except for the "main beam" or trailing edge. I am left with the 1/16th" lip where the gusset rests inside the main beam rabbet. I didn't want to run the gusset all the way to the trailing edge by removing the rabbet because I d...

Re: Beg,Borrow or Steal or even purchase a good Rib Jig?

It is very nice of BPA to have a jig to loan, but I would encourage you to build your own. You may need it again, and they really are not hard to make. I made three (yes, it took three to get to one I liked, but I learned in the process). The last one was made from MDF and small nails for aligning ...

Re: Beg,Borrow or Steal or even purchase a good Rib Jig?

Happy to say that as of Yesterday I have one available!!!!! Just finished my last rib (plus a few spares). I enjoyed taking the time to build it and make it to my specs. I find it more civil to curse at myself for any frustrations with the jig than cursing another guy who built it. But borrowi...

Wanted "Vi Kapler style" tail hinges

Does anybody have an extra finished set (all 9 pairs) laying around they could sell? Oscar sounds pretty busy and only offers the rough cast for sale now. Thanks!
