Re: Brazing Rods for 4130

Bicyclists braze 4130 quite a lot. Check into bulletin boards that cater to them.

I’ve seen a fair amount of plain old brass brazing on VERY OLD airplane parts.

Re: Aluminum cylinder head for Model A

Wow, would have to consult the Old Testament! Generally, they increase HP, about 10, at the expense of some reliability. Mostly popular on piets for weight savings. Some had bosses for drilling for a second set of plugs. They come from the model A performance community, not really a Piet community i...

Re: bungee cord question for jenny style gear

I’ve used ugly old hose clamps. Vintagey looking safety wire wrapped them. Zip ties! All worked fine.

I simply liked the safety wire wrapped the most.

Want to get done in record time? Do SOMETHING every single day. Anything. As long as it intends to move forward. Doesn’t matter if it’s a mistake and actually doesn’t. Just has to have the intention of moving forward. It’s those “walk away for months” that make builds take forever. This doesn’t triv...

Re: Work Area Question

I’m a professional woodworker near Atlanta for the last 20 years... Like mentioned, you’ll want sort of “comfortable” conditions for application of adhesives and finishes. Otherwise, leave the wood basically in conditions similar to where the plane will live, which is a protected but non environment...

Re: Trailering a Piet

I trailered a one piece wing Piet in one trip with a light duty 30’ bumper pull Trailer and half ton truck. Easy trailer to make with a cheap camper frame. Frequently found for a couple hundred bucks. Fuse and tail feathers put on very front, facing forward. Wing set just aft of wheels, and may hang...

My take is that about any major component could be made to work fairly efficiently. But it will likely take a little fiddling.

Re: best gear woods

When I rebuilt 2RN’s gear, I used southern yellow pine from a pallet. I think proper fitment, like the legs being the right thickness, or shims being added so a good tight fit is achieved is more important than the species. I fly off very rough unimproved fields so did go with the SYP for its streng...

Re: Wooden repair

You need the epoxy if you’re using a covering system that is MEK based so it doesn’t dissolve the varnish.

Using Stewart glue and latex, regular varnish is fine... which I also think is true if you’re using dope.

Using poly fiber, use epoxy.

Check the instructions for what you’re using.

Small shops very effective. I’ve made parts out of a footlocker on a carrier. Built entire control line stunters in hotel rooms. Done ALL manners of mechanical things on a kitchen table. When you don’t have much room to lose things, nothing spare to lose anyway, no big power tools to ruin something ...

Re: First flight of 2020

Thanks! It was a relatively short flight filled with anticipation... my most recent flight was a month or more ago and I was basically forced down due to a rough running engine. No real problem, very near a friends field. Making a long story short I’m nearly certain at this point it was merely carb ...

Another consideration is too much clamping pressure, which can displace too much epoxy, the more common way of not having enough.

To further put your mind at ease... Years ago I broke my lower longerons right there in the curve. I scarfed new longerons on right there using the normal 15:1 taper, but without scarf plates and dry bent them right back into place. The joints are readily visible and easy to inspect. Despite the ten...

Hehe,

I didn't notice that. Not a glowing endorsement of my ability to sell something.... Which is cool.

Tried to go flying in 2rn yesterday, but found a hole in the exhaust. Anyone recognize the exhaust stacks? Are they Aeronca? Need some new ones.

Sorry not responsive, just a lot going on... NX2RN is still for sale but here's the deal, I love the plane and don't really need to sell it. I just don't really need to keep it either. I'm asking $10,000. it's in annual, flies regularly, and has no real issues. To be a show stopper it needs recovere...

Re: replacing bungees (need advice)

Hey mark, Can't be too much different than doing the straight axle bungee. First, wrap a bungee without tension and see how the length compares the tensioned one. Should demonstrate about 10 percent stretch. Just a warm fuzzy sort of thing to know. Just pull as you go, two pairs of hands. Once done,...

I'm located just south of Chatt, nearest to GA77, next closest 9a5. Have a a65 powered Piet. Give me a shout, 423 580 1383, Mike Danford.

Can probably help with a few things. And always good to get together with other Piet folks.

Hate to be the first in this category. Too many planes, and besides, might get me back to building one! Short wood fuse. Cabanes an inch or two longer. Cutout for rear cockpit access.
