Hello all. I'm looking into starting my first build. Not being a pilot, I imagineI will have a ton of questions. I picked up a set of plans and a seeminglycherry A65.---------TravisRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Mon, 18 May 2015 20:17:02 -0500Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: New to the group...

What type of overhaul? the one done on mine was toservice limits except where the mechanic felt it was too close to servicelimits. Looks nice, Travis. It's got chromed cylinders, shielded ignition and comeswith a prop hub (those are getting scarce and are worth about $500 in goodcondition) - all good things to have.So you've already made one of the many decisions required to build aPietenpol - what engine to use. Now you'll need to make all the otherdecisions - one piece or three piece wing, split axle or straight axlelanding gear, and dozens of other decisions. Are you currently working on your pilot's license? I would not recommendplanning on learning in your Pietenpol unless you've already got aninstructor who a) has a lot of time in Pietenpols and b) has agreed to teachyou in it. As a flight instructor with considerable time in Pietenpols Iwould not want to teach a new student in one, unless it had brakes in thefront cockpit (which most do not). I would recommend learning in somethinglike a Cessna 150, then getting 10 or 20 hours in a J-3 Cub before climbinginto your Pietenpol. You've already gotten good advice about the Bingelis books. I stronglyrecommend trying to get to Brodhead (if you're going to Oshkosh anyway,Brodhead is just 90 miles south of Oshkosh and is the weekend beforeOshkosh). That's the best place to see a variety of Pietenpols and talkwith the builders. While at Oshkosh, plan to attend the Pietenpol Forum (ifthere is one) and spend some time in the woodworking workshop, as well asthe PolyFiber fabric workshop.Good Luck,Jack PhillipsNX899JPSmith Mountain Lake, Virginia-----Original Message-----

Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Re: New to the group...I disagree with Jack slightly, I would see if you can find someone who willteach in a taildragger from the getgo. If you start with the tail wheel itis easier than trying to transition to a tailwheel from a training wheel.BUT my disagreement is not set in concrete. If the best deal is a Cessna150 instructor, don't hesitate. Get them to teach you. you can transition.I always try to do two things before I post a question on the list. #1 didUncle Tony (Bingelis) write about it, #2 I do a "Matronics Pietenpol"Google search about the subject. Then you can ask the question with somegood background.Uncle Tony will give you several ways to do something, but he did notconsider everything and some of his information is a little dated. Also Hisbooks can be hard to look through, very little is indexed.Blue Skies,Steve DOn Tue, May 19, 2015 at 8:12 AM, Jack Philips wrote:> jack(at)bedfordlandings.com>>> Looks nice, Travis. Steve, the only reason I didn=99t recommend starting in a taildragger is that there are VERY few schools that will teach from the ground up in a taildragger. Insurance is just too expensive. I recently investigated what the insurance costs would be for me to offer tailwheel endorsement training in my Cessna 170 and gave up due to the expense. I=99m currently paying about $500 a year for full hull insurance and liability. To insure it for tailwheel checkouts (NOT allowing the student to solo my airplane, mind, but with me giving dual in it) the insurance premium jumped to $3500 a year! Since I doubt I would do over $3,000 worth of tailwheel endorsements a year, I declined. I never even asked what the insurance would cost if I let a tailwheel student solo my airplane.By all means, if you live near a flight school that instructs in tailwheel airplanes, such as they have at Poplar Grove, Illinois, or Hartford, Wisconsin, then go for it. But having a flight school close by where you can learn the basics of flying and then transitioning to tailwheel training after you get your license is probably the better course.Jack PhillipsNX899JPSmith Mountain Lake, Virginia

I did my pilot=99s license in a Cessna 150 and then bought a Taylorcraft BC 12D. The transition was painless.Robert Gow,President and DAO Manager.Avionics Design Services Ltd.Phn 705-527-6095Cell 416-434-3393Fax 705-527-6028 www.avionicsdesign.ca
