Newsletter - Lift Strut Detach
I'm curious about the article in the recent newsletter in which a lift strut detached from the fuselage. Does anyone know if this was a one piece or 3 piece wing? Obviously the one piece wing would be at an advantage in this situation. In the case of a 3 piece wing apparently the force that the stru...

Re: Piet Airfoil FC-10
Oscar mentioned articles in the newsletter analyzing the wing struts and the tension strap that crosses the fuselage between the lift struts.
Does anyone know which newsletters those articles were printed in?
Thanks

OK Doug I'll give you a call next time I'm going to Wichita. Probably will not be until around June.

Re: Piet Airfoil FC-10
Maybe if Mike still has the FC-10 foil data modeled in his computer he can run the negative AOA numbers with no real effort.
I come to Wichita a bit on business trips with "down-time" in the evenings. Perhaps I can come by and see your project....

Re: Piet Airfoil FC-10
It was a good article and had more of just the info I was seeking. Although it did not show any negative angles of attack. Not much of a concern in cruise, climb and landing performance, which he dealt with. But would be helpful to calculate the negative lift distribution on the spars, and thus the ...

Update: I found a pdf of Noel Becar's article. I can provide it to anyone who is interested.

Re: Piet Airfoil FC-10
Thanks guys for your input. Yeah, that's the kind of info I'm looking for. Oscar, do you by chance have the article by Noel Becar still, or a link to it. I googled it and found a link, but it is no longer active. I've read your articles on the strut attach and the various spar types. I've not see th...

Piet Airfoil FC-10
Some sources show the Pietenpol Aircamper as being equipped with an FC-10 airfoil. Does anyone know if this is a "published airfoil"? Are any of the "basic parameters" (Cl Cd Cm) known about it? I am embarking on some stress analysis and knowing the Cm would be most beneficial in...

Center Section Flooring
Does anyone know all the functions performed by the plywood floor of the center section? Does it just support the fuel tank or is it also needed to resist loads in the center section and keep it "square". I could see this particularly the case in the 3 piece wing, not so much the one piece...

Wood and Steel Fuselages
The wood and steel fuselages are substantially different in design. The wood version is comprised mainly of vertical members combined with diagonals that slope "down and back". Whereas the steel version has no vertical member but rather diagonals that slope both ways. Also the steel versio...

Re: Lift Strut attach to Spar
Rick, Thanks for the pics. That is pretty much just was I was picturing as "ideal". What do you mean by "newer plans"? I just bought some from the Pietenpol Family. Are those the newer ones (as compared to the Flying and Glider manual) or is there yet another updated version? Tha...

Re: Strut Materials
Oscar thanks for the clarification on L'/p and Euler.
Perhaps I should have sent two different replies - I'm not an experience "forum user".
I actually addressed the first paragraph to Oscar and the second to Roger. Sorry for the confusion.

Re: Strut Materials
Thank you fellas for the feedback. Oscar, it is my recollection that somewhere an article I read about the fact that most of the loads are carried by the main lift struts and very little lift is actually carried through the cabanes was perhaps something you wrote, maybe in a newsletter or something....

Re: Strut Materials
Are the cabanes made from the same material as the main lift struts or is a smaller material used?

Strut Materials
I did a brief search on this, and to my surprise did not find a lot of info on it, though I'm sure it has been a well hashed topic, so apologize for the repeat this will be to some. What material is used for the Lift Struts and Cabanes? The plans show the lift struts to be streamlined 2812 tubing si...

Longeron dimensions
It is quite common in early wood designs for the longerons and other fuselage diagonals member so be 3/4" x 3/4" and some are also 1" x 1", like the Piet. I have seen considerable discussion in regard to using 3/4" spars instead of the routed 1" spars but have not seen ...

Lift Strut attach to Spar
The "original" plans show the brackets on the spar to which the lift struts attach to be something near vertical which puts it aligned with the loads that "intuitively" seem to be applied to this bracket to resist the wings upward deflection. But in analysis the lift strut can re...
