Re: West coast Piet

Thank you! What a great idea. Can I recommend a “Donate” tab on the site to help keep it going? I too hit that site weekly.

Re: Will this spring work for A frame tailwheel

I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes here but I just want to add my experience. I purchased the spring and die spring cages from MCmaster-Carr (suggested above) because the John Deer T143444 was very expensive at $89. (US). When they arrived they seemed heavy to me. As you know, the Pietenpol tends...

Re: Plywood delamination?

Thanks for your comments. When I do this project, and things don’t seem right, I think, “Is it me? Am I doing something wrong? Should I not be trying to pull plies apart?” But then AC Spruce has been good about replacing the stuff (only with more bad stuff), so customer service has been good. Qualit...

Plywood delamination?

Hello all: My question this time has to do with plywood, specifically 1/8” 4’ x 8’ mahogany I received from ACS. This plywood came with the “fuselage kit.” Very pricey nowadays so I expect good stuff. Ordered in OCT received in Jan and both pieces pulled apart easily with fingernails. I sent it back...

Wow, okay. I think I would want some way of knowing it was secured, though. I really appreciate the input.

Re: Aileron hinge pin

Thanks, Oscar. I ask because I’m finding it difficult to find a hinge pin longer than 6’, which leads me to think that there are actually two hinge pins per piano hinge, one secured from one side and another (3’+) coming in from the other? It would seem that a builder would use a pin longer than 6’ ...

Aileron hinge pin

Hi folks, So, I have this nice 6’ length of ms2001 aluminum aileron hinge about to get attached to my ailerons. The pin is the exact length of the hinge. I’ll need some extra length of the pin to bend and secure to the structure once the hinge is attached. Did you trim the length of your hinges to g...

Yes, that’s what I’m talking about! I’ve seen this and wondered if there was any adverse trim. You answered my question perfectly!

Re: Rudder horn slanted down

And I also want to add (Oscar), I have purchased a second hand Pietenpol nose fuel tank with an 18 gal capacity (and will use an o-200 engine), so plenty of weight up there. Using your logic, maybe having the rudder horns tilted down inline with the rudder cables and thus adding nose up trim may not...

Rudder horn slanted down

Hello: I noticed a few Piets have the rudder horns slanted down slightly inline with the cables (like the elevator horns slanted inward inline with the cables). I see no problem with the elevator horns because they cancel each other out aerodynamically, but the rudder horn slanted down may act like ...

Re: Moving ribs for drag wires

Thank you for letting me know how you did it. Before permanently epoxying my ribs to the spars I wanted to get as much input as possible as there is no turning back! Thankfully I asked a few other builders what they did and they had good ideas too. So I ended up doing a little of both. I slightly mo...

Moving ribs for drag wires

Hello Pietenpol friends: I know this topic has come up before and I scanned the posts, but maybe not deep enough because I couldn't find much info. I'd really like opinions about moving ribs (or not) to make way for drag (anti drag) wires. I measured multiple times and am confident my rib spacing is...

Aileron Hinges 6'?

Ok, I'm about to settle on aileron hinges and would like to hear opinions. Lots of folks use the full length extruded piano hinges, and I'm leaning that way, but what about weight? A 6' section could weigh just under a pound. 3-4 6" pieces of piano hinge would be much lighter and one could use ...

Using .080 4130 fittings

Greetings. I am one of those who purchased precut fittings from an online source. I want to use these fittings but I found they are all of .080" 4130 thickness. Most of the people I talk to use .090, and even the plans call for some 12 gage, which is .104" thickness. What are your thoughts...

Re: 4130 vs 1025 (mild) steel.

Thanks, Oscar. Some people sell "Pietenpol fittings" out of 4130, but thinner than what's called for in the plans and I wonder where they get their data. Ho well. I guess I'll substitute at the same thickness. Thanks! The short answer is "it depends". It depends on the shape of ...

Hi Folks...

I'm thinking of making Christmas ornaments of the Last Original but can't read the N number. Does anyone know it?

Thanks...

Looking for old copies of newsletter..

Hi Guys,

If anyone has a bunch of old copies of the BPA newsletter that they can part with please email me and let me know. For some reason I am unable to download copies from the website but could use the hints and techniques from these old issues.

Thanks!

4130 vs 1025 (mild) steel.

Hi folks. Funny how lots has been written about this except what I really want to know. Most of the fittings in the plans are of 1025 (mild) steel. We can use a piece of 4130 in place of the mild steel at the same thickness (13 gage lets say, or .090). BUT that defeats the purpose of using 4130. 413...
