Re: Piet build
Very cool.......... would love to help where I can, but way up in Alaska. But have family around that area, so down there from time to time...... The facebook group has tons of info. It is sort of scary to start and head down the road, but super fun. Others might have some other ideas, but I think a...

aileron spar and other material list
Hi guys I am building ribs, about 2 a day as we head into Alaska winter. Getting ready to order spars and other larger spruce items. A few questions. 1. Has anyone found better availability and price on spruce wing spars than Aircraft Spruce? Current catalog price is over $1,800 for 4 wing spars. Pl...

Re: Length of center section struts
Hi Richard......... thanks so much Great info. Also for the strut sizes. I think I will do the 2 inch increase, unless I get other info. I also liked how you attached the diagonals to the forward struts. I was wondering if I should weld up an attach fitting for the diagonals when building the center...

Length of center section struts
HI folks In the past I have seen some discussion on lengthening the center section cabane struts, to give us taller folks better access under the wing. I seem to remember a number of folks extending them 2 inches (some even discussed 4 inches). Is this 2 inch increase still a good idea? Are folks st...

Re: Spar thickness
Hi Oscar........ thanks good comments. I traded emails with Andrew Pietenpole today and he said his grandfather did it both ways. And the last one he did, he laminated a bunch of pieces together to make the spars. I think at this point I have decided to stick with 1 inch, and just update the fitting...

Re: Spar thickness
Hi folks.......... reactivating this discussion...... this is right where I am at.... 1" vs 3/4" spars........ would love to hear your current thoughts. Here are some options as I see it. From my point. a. 1 inch, non-routed b. 1 inch, routed c. 3/4 inch, non-router, with 1/8 strips glued ...

Re: tail wheel steering vs castering
Ken thanks.... good comment on the side loads with the leaf spring style. This project came with a partially completed "plans style" skid. And I will keep looking at it. I will soon have to choose my options. Just cause I am more familiar with it, I am leaning to the leaf spring, but under...

Re: tail wheel steering vs castering
Fun, great conversation......... since I live in "aircraft meka" and in my DAR life I inspect a lot of experimental homebuilts.......... I think I am going to check out the rudder and tail wheel distance spacing on both certified and experimental. With all of us Super Cub guys arguing abou...

Re: tail wheel steering vs castering
great conversation........... I think I will check some other planes and see if the hole spacing from rudder horn, and from tail wheel is similar. Although some planes have the tail wheel steering come directly off the rudder horn. So of course a bit different geometry. Other similar question..........

Howdy. Bobby you mentioned you bought fittings from an online store and they were .080. Was this by chance Icarus. I have been trying to get a hold of them for a couple weeks with no response. I am using the info on their web site........ Any idea if they are still around and doing it........ or hav...

Re: tail wheel steering vs castering
Hi Ken great comments........ thanks...... I think I have decided to go the "steering" route. If you have pictures of your tail wheel and spring set up that would be great. I see a number of folks that are using a single leaf spring, and then a typical small homebuilt steerable tail wheel....

tail wheel steering vs castering
Hi folks I am deciding on what type of tail wheel on this Alaska project I absorbed. Presently there is no landing gear or tail wheel. I think I am planning on doing the cabane vee type "cub style" gear up front. I love the look of the all wood, old school gear, but I think it might be bet...

Alaska Project
Hi folks. Mark Barker here in Alaska. I "absorbed" an already started Pietenpol project, so diving into things, and learning. The fuselage is basically complete, but has a bit of hanger/sitting around damage that needs repair. It is the long version so that is good, for me a taller guy. Th...
