Thanks very much, I understand what your saying and that leaving it solid is the better option. I was only looking at it from the aspect of weight as fir is heavier. I just ran some of my own simple calculations though and a 3/4" fir spar will only be a little over 7 lbs heavier than a 3/4" spruce ...
