Re: 4130 vs 1020

4130 tubing is typically sold in the normalized state (4130N). For thicknesses of 1/8" (.125") or less, when welded (using either Oxy/Acetylene or TIG) it will return to the normalized state, provided it is allowed to cool slowly, in still air. Colder ambient air, or even a slight breeze w...

Re: 4130 vs 1020

Non-aircraft material? 1020/1025 steel tubing actually has a good deal of history in aircraft structures, such as J3 Cub and Aeronca Champ/Chief. There's nothing wrong with using 1020 steel where called for in the plans. Finding 1020 steel tubing in the specific sizes called for, in small quantities...

Tom, Bending sheet metal with the grain isn't actually a "NO NO", it just has to be approached differently. When bending with the grain, a larger bend radius must be used than when bending transverse to the grain. However, for optimum strength, and the sharpest possible bend radius, bends ...

1/16" Aircraft Ply for the leading edge. I didn't understand your original comment about the need to "put flax where the rib meets the spar". Now that I see your photo I understand what you were referring to ... but I also don't understand why it would be needed. This is not a structu...

Re: Cabane Strut Fittings

Dan, No, you're not a fool. The detail for the fittings shown in Vi Kapler's drawing are the same as shown in the original plans, and are equally as strong as the versions made with two U-brackets ***provided the welds are done properly***. Many builders opt for the two U-bracket method as a "b...

Re: Control cable slack

George, There aren`t any control deflections shown in the plans. Practically, they will be limited by the actual movement that the pilot can physically move the stick fore and aft. I realize that doesn't really answer your question, but it does establish the maximum possible physical movement limits...
