Tail Spruce Strips

Post by PoconoJohn »

This is one of the spruce strips at the trailing edge of the rudder. There won't be much left if I sand it to match the back edge. Just wondering what you did. I'd like to sand gradually (smooth curve), but seems like it's better to have an abrupt curve (just knock the corner off).

Thanks!

I rabbeted in a recess for the full length of the edge pieces to receive the gussets and cap strips.

I too had a rabbeted recess. Hopefully you'll be able to see in the picture that, while the gussets lie flush, the capstrip doesn't quite fit flush in the rabbet. I used a hand plane and sanding block to feather the capstrips in so that there would not be an abrupt step for the fabric to negotiate.

Cheers, Ken

Thank you Ken and Dave. I ended up just sanding them.
