Tom Wottreng, email me offline for his contact information. Tom is an A&P;IA who specializes in small Continentals. He is a great fellow and a superbteacher. He and I did the final assembly of my engine. I don't know whatTom charges now for an 85, but I can say I would trust him with my life andhis engines are a bargain. Attached is a picture of my 85.JackDSM _____

Sometimes it's not what you look for but how you look for it.For a long time I was checking Craigslist for "aircraft" and"airplane". Then one day I thought " Why not search " lycoming".Well, pressed enter and up pops an O-290 with 800hrs onthe bottom end and 50 on the top. Hmmm... that shouldleave enough hours to see me the rest of my lifetime! And it's $2500. No mags though. But I already have those!Upon picking it up he says "You want an extra new ( in box )cylinder for $200?" So I bought that. Next he turns upwith a box of the old pistons and six used cylinders, atleast two of which appear to have very few hours on themand gives them to me.OH YEAH! It came with the logbook too! Certified! So look everywhere and look creatively.Clif"Imagination decides everything." ~ Blaise Pascal Plus every time I would see a "genuine aircraft" 60 year old cylinder selling for $900 I would think "I ain't paying $900 for some stinkin1940s relic of the internal combustion stone age", even though I could afford it. and start scanning Trade-A-Plane for a good O-200. rick________________________________________________________________________________

Shad, it depends on the propeller. Last summer, when I ferried RyanMueller's new A65 Continental powered Pietenpol (bought from GenePennington) from west Tennessee to Brodhead, I was accompanied by Randy Bushin his Corvair powered Pietenpol. I expected to have difficulty keeping upwith Randy with all the power the Corvair produces, but instead I found Ihad to throttle back to allow him to keep up with me. Ryan's Piet has abeautiful Cloudcars scimitar prop and it performs much better than my A65powered Piet with a Sensenich prop. I want to get one of those props formine!Jack PhillipsNX899JP "Icarus Plummet"Raleigh, NC _____

The PolyFiber manual says to glue the fabric to the rib capstrips usingPolyTak for undercambered ribs, then do the initial shrink BEFOREribstitching. Then stitch it, then do the final two shrinks. The Ceconitemanual does not mention it, and Ceconite is only shrunk to 250=B0, and doesn'tuse the 300=B0 and 350=B0 shrinks that PolyFiber uses.Jack PhillipsNX899JP "Icarus Plummet"Raleigh, NC-----Original Message-----

Caveat emptor.Be sure to cross all your Ts and dot your Is before you send any money to Aeromax and consult the CorvAircraft list archives on this mater. There is some not so nice history there.Michael ----- Original Message -----

Got the horizontal stab leading edge glued on and mostly sanded today-will match up the elevator ends and finish it up this week. Vertical/rudderare done, will be starting on the fuse soon! :D--------Earl BrownI may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where Iintended to be.Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ttachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/dsc_ ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Stab Leading Edge

It's not the lubrication that's the problem. We all know that a piece of wire will break if it's bentback and forth a number of times. Well=2C stainless willcrystalize and break a lot sooner than non stainless. As the cable moves back and forth over a pulley it is doing the same thing a little bit at a time. The question is=2C how long before that break will happen? The otherquestion is=2C how long before your cables=2C in yourlocation=2C where your plane will spend the rest of it'sdays=2C will rust and need replacement? To me=2C theformer is of greater concern and my plane will live500 ft from the shoreline of the Salish Sea in thecompany of forty others=2C some of which have beenthere since the fifties. There's also a hundred or soaircraft at Boundary Bay that are within a quarter mileof the same salty waters. All cabled with galvanizedand 85% of them have never seen the inside of ahanger.Ask around. I think for a lot of you=2C strange looks willbe the order of the day with the question=2C " Why doyou want to do that? It's not a seaplane is it?"Clif"Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least." ~ Johann Wolfgang von GoetheDoesn't the zinc coating on the galvanized "lubricate" the cable?-- Dan Yocum yocum137(at)gmail.com"I fly because it releases my mind from the tyranny of petty things."what does going around a pulley have to do with galvanized vs stainless??? > To: pietenpol-list(at)matronics.com> > > That reminds me. It finally dawned on me that the GN-1 that I bought is the only one I've ever seen w/out the cross bracing cables that crisscross between the wing struts. The fella that I bought it from told me to keep in mind that if a wing drops=2C or when you level it out after a bank=2C that it "takes all she got" to get that wing up level again. He put in some quick gap seals on the airlerons using dope/fabric=2C and said that it helps a little=2C but he said to just be aware of it when the time comes to fly it. The airframe does have about 480hrs on it=2C so it IS a proven airframe=2C but I am wondering if this lack of cross bracing may be contributing to the wing possibly warping slightly with aileron use=2C etc..> > also=2C before the last person bought it and rebuilt it=2C it was in a mishap back in '02. This=2C in my mind confirms my theory about the lack of cross bracing. Here's an excerpt of the accident back then:> > > He began the takeoff roll and initiated a> normal climb until about 20 feet above ground level (agl) when the airplane suddenly and violently> banked to the left. He applied full right rudder and also right aileron input but was not able to> recover before the left wing impacted the ground. He then reduced power and the airplane then> nosed over and came to rest on a closed runway. Postcrash=2C he checked the flight controls and> stated=2C "they moved correctly and freely." He also stated that there was no evidence of pre-impact> structural failure or malfunction.> > Any thoughts on this?> > Larry> > > > > Read this topic online here:> > http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... 699#313699> > > > > Attachments: > > http://forums.matronics.com//files/1_132.jpg> > >=================> > > http://www.matronics.com/Navigator?Piet ... ntribution ________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Corvair Engine
