Pietenpol-List: Wheels, diameter, width

Hello good Piet-ple,Thanks to Ken Perkins I have some real nice wheel hubs. I modified the CAD filethat he sent me and had "West Coast Waterjet" make me a set of brake rotors. These rotors are the same outer diameter as the "Honda 400 quad" (the calipersI plan to use) but these custom rotors have the bolt-hole pattern to fit thePerkins hubs.Feels almost like a "kit plane" to pick up parts that are nearly complete - partsI don't have to scratch build by hand...!!!Having a fun adventure.......Jake--------Jake Schultz - curator,Newport Way Air Museum (OK, it's just my home)Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ttachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/brak ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Wheels, diameter, width

Vasek,Yes, you must account for the height of those wheels while designing your gear. Easiest way I know is to install the tailwheel on the fuselage, then set the front on saw horses, blocking it up until you get the 'deck angle' you want...maybe 11-13=81=B0. You can then determine how long to make the gear to match up with your wheels.Gary BootheNX308MB-----Original Message-----

Price is 6500 bucks.I know it is an am arm and a leg but price it out and if interested call meat 706 594 3811 . I have 19" rims which makes for a 26" tall tire. I built my steel split axle gearat plans length/height. Mr. Pietenpol built a few like this too. Seems towork good... WW told me to contact the Corvair club of America to see the various state clubs.I did that all on the Internet and found members selling cores. I didn't see any direct answer to Steve's question about retrofitting large wheelsto Cub-style gear. I've never done it, but it appears to me that the mainchange would be the axles. I don't know what size (diameter, length) the axleshafts are on the two different wheels. As always, you can go to www.westcoastpiet.com to get an idea of what might be involved. Under 'pictures', scroll down to Kevin Purtee's airplane and take a look at the straight-on shot that shows his landing gear. Also a good closeup of the way his brakes were set up.--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Re: Wheels, diameter, width

I have honda 350 rear motorcycle wheels. They come in 18 and I believe 19 inchrims but I have the 18 inch by 3 inch tires. These rims are cheap and plentifuland have there own brakes. I use them on the wood gear with the straight axle. They have easily more than 1500 landings on them.I have always thought that the split gear and wire wheels are asking for troubleas by design the landing load is converted directly into a side load as thegear moves. Not sure it is truly a problem however using a wheel that is successfulon a straight axle is not a read across to that on a split gear.I believe that these wheels are as strong as the wooden gear is in side load.Sent from my iPad> On Mar 2, 2014, at 6:43 AM, "taildrags" wrote:> > > I didn't see any direct answer to Steve's question about retrofitting large wheelsto Cub-style gear. I replaced the bearings with bronze bushings with 1.5" inside diameter. The break plate is machined for a piece of 1.5" I.D. Scaffold tubing and welded in. The brake lever is shortened. I can help you thru it with sketches if you want.Sent from my iPad> On Mar 4, 2014, at 7:09 AM, "larharris2 Harris" wrote:> > I am studying the same. Yes. It will take a few days before I m home.
