Hi all=2CJust a quick introduction to this Matronics Pietenpol family=85My name is Ed Knouse=2C better known as =93KTOWN=94 to family and friends. I am a first-time=2C novice builder=2C who purchased a partially completed Pietenpol Air Camper about a year ago. I=92m based out of Calvada Meadows (NV74) in Pahrump=2C Nevada. I=92ve learned a great deal about Experimental Amateur-Building in the past year with a very steep learning curve! I=92ve already learned some valuable lessons the hard way as well! Until now I=92ve only been following a =93Tailwind=94 forum on Yahoo (for reasons I=92ll explain later)!I=92m a former Air Force pilot (F-16s=2C U-2s and C-12s among other training aircraft). I=92m fairly new to the GA world (just the last 3 years)...again a steep learning curve...flying C-172s and SR-20/22s (several =93flavors=94 of each)=2C C-206=2C the PAC-750 parachute plane on Sundays at Jean=2C NV for fun and excitement (and to supplement my =93aircraft porn=94 addiction!) and I=92ve got about a half dozen landings in an RV-6! I=92ve had a few =93trike=94 rides as well and hope to complete my checkout in a trike in the next few months as time permits! I just completed my Single Engine Sea rating with Mo Martin and evaluator at Lake Havasu=2C AZ (KHII) a few months back (most fun you can have with your clothes on!)! I=92ve also got a great support group with my local EAA Chapter 1160 at Calvada! I've logged nearly 500 hours since joining the world of GA flying. When I bought =93The Piety Project=94 as I affectionately refer to what will ultimately be called =93The Fabulous Princess Di=94 (after my Brit wife Diana). The fuselage=2C landing gear=2C tail (elevator and rudder) and one wing was essentially completed. I have since completed about 90-95% of the last wing and only have the leading edge to shape and then attach the hardware. I hope to hang the wings and run the control cables (when I return from an extended overseas business trip in mid-August). The Piety Project came with a Lycoming 290-G that was laying around the hanger which has had a major overhaul (a topic for a separate post) and has recently had its first test run. Tweaking a few things on the motor and then hope to hang it on the fuselage by early September sporting an Insight G3 gauge to make sure I don=92t mess up the good work on the overhaul! For all you =93purists=94 cover your eyes for the next bit. I plan to put on an electrical system (with alternator) and have already installed LED lights for night flying. I will also be installing the GTX345 (ADS-B in/out compliant) so I can fly into controlled airspace after 2020 (I=92ve already been from as far east as Fort Worth to as far west as Sacramento in the other aircraft mentioned above)! Still deciding on a radio/intercom system. I plan to use my iPhone 6 plus (a my poor man=92s glass cockpit) with ForeFlight. It will still have a needle/ball and round dial airspeed/altimeter! It has dual flight controls and wire wheels. Hopefully that is enough to wet your whistles! As I mentioned earlier=2C based on questions I had regarding the 290-G conversion for aircraft use=2C I got connected with the Tailwind Forum on Yahoo. Again=85a long story about the 290-G conversion that I=92ll save for another post (and yes I=92m sure it will be too heavy and has way to much power at 125hp). I plan to mount a Sensenich=2C 74" by 45" (pitch) wooden prop on it! DOES THAT SOUND "about right"??? Soliciting inputs! If I can learn as much from =93real Pietenpol=94 builders and pilots from this forum as I have learned about the 290-G from the Tailwind forum=2C I will be more than ecstatic!!! >From the small bit of info/background I have provided above I am guessing some of you are cringing=2C some are laughing hysterically=2C=2C some are intrigued=2C some are curious and most if not all want more info and will be chomping at the bit with suggestions! I have only had the opportunity to see one completed Pietenpol =93in the flesh=94 at Fox Field (KWJF) in Lancaster=2C CA and that is apparently a =93hybrid=94 with Cub wings.I hope to be undertaking taxi tests by October (but I have a tendency to be overly optimistic!) and flights shortly thereafter. Bummed I missed the West Coast event in June. That would have been an excellent opportunity to learn tons of info and drool on your aircraft=2C but even had I known about it I would not have been able to attend due to my current business travel.Right now I have only been working on =93The Piety Project=94 on weekends from a shared=2C rented hanger=2C but with the recent install of a generator=2C lights and a swamp cooler=2C I hope to =93hit it hard=94 when I return. I=92m looking forward to the information I=92m sure I will be able to glean from this forum and look forward to chatting with=2C emailing and hopefully meeting many of you in the next few weeks=2C months and years! I hope to set up a separate blog site and YouTube channel and post photos and videos there and here once I learn a bit more about how to navigate around Matronics! Cheers=2CKTOWNOwner/pilot of =93The Piety Project=94 (aka =93The Fabulous Princess Di=94) ________________________________________________________________________________

Welcome Ed, great summary! Looks like you are making great progress and thank you so very much for your service. I miss the 16's we lost here in KDSM. I could be wrong but I believe Jerry Dotson on this list has a similar engine with good results. Tools,No, I won't be going to Brodhead this year. it's kinda far for me and I wouldneed to take three weeks off work to do it. It's five days of flying each waywith decent weather. I do have another Piet camping trip scheduled for July 15th weekend. I'm goingto the gold country of CA. Columbia airport about 4.5 hours north of me. Abunch of flying guys going. That should be fun.Enjoy Brodhead,--------Scott LiefeldFlying N11MS since March 1972Steel TubeC-85-12Wire WheelsBrodhead in 1996Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: "The Piety Project" ...new member to this forum!

Hi Ed,Welcome to the world of Pietenpols, and Pietenpeople!A couple of suggestions for you:If at all possible, try to come to Brodhead for the annual Pietenpol/Hatzfly-in. It will be in just a few weeks (July 21-23) at C37, BrodheadWisconsin (about 90 miles south of Oshkosh). There you can see (andpossibly get a ride in) up to two dozen different Pietenpols. In additionathere are forums geared toward Pietenpol construction. Well worth the trip,if you can make it, and it's right before that "other" fly-in in Wisconsinso you can see both on one trip.As for your instrumentation plans, I doubt the FAA will grant anairworthiness certificate with your instrumentation being just an iPhone 6and a couple of instruments. The regs require at a minimum that you have analtimeter, airspeed indicator, oil pressure, oil temperature, and a magneticcompass. Before Mike Cuy or someone else says it, I'll tell you to buy the TonyBingelis books: The Sportplane Builder, Sportplane Construction Techniques,Firewall Forward, and Tony Bingelis on Engines. You can get them from theEAA. Invaluable information for building a plane from scratch. As for your prop selection, I wouldn't go by anything you read on theTailwind forum. A Pietenpol has a LOT more drag than a Tailwind and theairplane's speed affects prop selection. Looking at Super Cubs (or HatzBiplanes) with O-290's would make more sense. Aircraft Spruce lists aSensenich wooden prop for an O-290 powered Super Cub as 74 x 49.Good to have you building a Pietenpol!Jack PhillipsNX899JPSmith Mountain Lake, Virginia

I think you will find we are a very friendly group and areready and willing to help everyone out.I've been building for over three years, but hit a dry period here for the lastthree months. Things will change either time. Feel free to ask all the questionsyou want. We have a lot of knowledge....some rather useless! Hi Jack=2CThanks for the welcome! Unfortunately=2C I'll still be overseas on business until mid-August so will miss Brodhead and "the other" fly in this year! :-(Copy on the instrumentation plan...after your reply I re-read and realized my wording wasn't very clear. I'll still have a full suite of instruments...just hope to use ForeFlight as a "poor man's glass cockpit" as I like cross country into Class-B airspace=2C so the ADS-B=2C radios and ForeFlight (via an iPhone or mini-iPad) makes flight through busy airspace much more enjoyable and stress-free (not to mention legal now and past 2020)!I have several books (thanks for the additional suggestions) and my local air patch buildrs/pilots and EAA Chapter have been VERY key in my building progress so far! Great experience and lots of help and advice!I'm about to "pull the trigger" on a Sensenich W74FM (46 pitch) wooden prop (recommended for a PA-18...which I understand is a pretty close match). Nice to know I'm getting good advice and that you agree with my choice!Cheers=2CKTOWNEd Knouse"The Piety Project" (aka "The Fabulous Princess Di")Reserved N694YULycoming 290-G (converted)Wire wheels

Thanks Jack (Textor)!Sorry KDSM lost their Vipers. If Jerry (Dotson) is on this list or anyone has his contact info and he does have an O-290 (or equivalent) motor hanging off the front of his "Piet"=2C I'd love to suck his brain of knowledge=2C especially with respect to W&B and how he managed that issue (which according to Andrew Pietenpol might be a bigger one than I anticipated)!Cheers=2CKTOWNEd Knouse"The Piety Project" (aka "The Fabulous Princess Di")Reserved N694YULycoming 290-G (converted)Wire wheels

Oscar,Like I said, It was a quick sketch. It is actually a welded up box made of twopieces. The bottom, back and top is one piece bent in a C shape. The left side.front face and right side is the second piece. The two pieces fit togetherand are welded. It does not seal against the firewall. My drawing probablymis-lead you. Sorry about that. Scott: yes, you have made it very clear now how you built your separator. By anychance did you bother to stuff it with Brillo pad or any sort of separationmedia?Steve: the idea of using an old-timey "tin can" of some sort was exactly what Imeant. Hi Oscar,The old timey can Idea is a great one. Mine is under the cowl and can't be seenso I did what I did. I did not put anything inside of mine. A baffle or steel wool would probably makeit much more effective. I can only collect about enough liquid to fill acap from a Krylon paint can, before it starts to slobber a little. So, yes, Ibelieve that where your are headed with your question would be beneficial. Like I said, mine is not near perfect, but works well enough for me to leave italone.--------Scott LiefeldFlying N11MS since March 1972Steel TubeC-85-12Wire WheelsBrodhead in 1996Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

Welcome Ed=2C great summary! Looks like you are making great progress and thank you so very much for your service. I miss the 16's we lost here in KDSM. I could be wrong but I believe Jerry Dotson on this list has a similar engine with good results.
