After three evening classes at the local community college and 9 hours of practicetig welding, this is my best. I asked the instructor if he would climb intomy aircraft for a ride if he saw these welds and he assured me he would. Hetig welds all day for a living and said he would be happy to to do my weldingfor me if I wasn't comfortable with it.--------JohnRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ttachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/tig_ ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Tig Welding 101

To my untrained eye the weld looks really nice. I just wish I had a community collegein my town that taught a night course on welding!Very nice.--------Semper Fi,Terry HandRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Tig Welding 101

I'm also fortunate to only live 20 minutes from the Hobart Institute of Weldingwhich offers world class instruction. However, it is too expensive for a hobbyistlike me to attend.--------JohnRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Re: Tig Welding 101

I went to a Hobart seminar in Atlanta in the mid 60's. It was not a hands on justclassroom. They were teaching us how to weld armor plate for military airplanes. It was a good school. Basically how to treat the stuff so the welds didn'tcrack. Fairchild Aircraft paid the bill. We were building pilot and co-pilotarmor underneath the seats for C-123's headed for Vietnam. It was thin butenough to stop small arms fire.--------Jerry Dotson59 Daniel Johnson RdBaker, FL 32531Started building NX510JD July, 2009now covering21" wheelsLycoming O-235 C 2CJay Anderson CloudCars prop 76 X 44Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

Cut this piece in half across the weld with a bandsaw and check yourpenetration with a magnifying glass. That will tell you if your temp iscorrect. Wouldn't hurt to cut open several welds as you change from plate totube, etc while you are still learning. Can't be too careful when your buttis a couple hundred feet in the air. Jerry=2CThanks to you and you workmates! I flew AC-130 Gunships in SEA and the armor in my seat pan stopped a round that would have put a big dent in my butt if not worse! Always wanted to thank whoever put the armor there. Even if it was C-123's that you worked on=2C the AC-130's got the same treatment.Take Care=2CMax > Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Tig Welding 101
