Mark,Actually I found TIG to be much easier. The hand coordination is very similar to gas welding. The advantage is no pre-heating needed, it is quicker, and I believe easier to control the heat. Very clean- no soot/sparks etc. Also I can do some aluminum welding with TIG whereas as hard as I tried, I could never gas weld aluminum. The disadvantage is the cost of the equipment. After you start TIG you would never go back to gas.Dan HelsperPuryear, TN-----Original Message-----

The only other difficulty with TIG (so I've heard and read) is the fact that you'llneed to normalize after welding. I'm not saying that TIG is the wrong wayto go... heck, I'd like to try it sometime... but the heat effected zone isso small compared to gas that much of the stress is concentrated in a small area, requiring heat treating or normalizing to reduce or disburse the potentialfor damage or failure. This could be as simple as breaking out the ol rosebudand heating the cluster or part to a dark cherry red and letting it air cool...but none the less, you are right back to your ol buddy, the oxy/acetylenetorch. Not an expert, just relaying what I've been told.--------Mark ChouinardWings, Center Section and Empannage and Fuse framed up - Working on Landing GearRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Re: What welding rod did you use for 4130?

Mark,I took one of those SportAir workshops (TIG welding) sponsored by EAA. According to the instructor (he was from Lincoln Welders) and all the written info that they provided, normalizing is not needed on the thinner metals such as we use on aircraft. I would highly recommend attendance at any of the Sportair workshops. Went to the fabric covering one also.BTW I met Gary Bell there for the first time. I work with the guys at EAA's Week's hangar where they do all sorts of weldingon their aircraft with TIG and don't normalize either.Furthermore, doing a LOT of reading on the matter, the process of normalizing israther complicated, requiring close temp control, times and cool down ratesfor it to be effective, none which can be done without rather weird equipmentand know how.Like usual, ask one question from three guys and get a dozen answers! It's thekind of thing that keeps me awake at nights...I'm finally firmly in the camp (mostly after having seen it in person a lot) thatTIG is fine, easier for me, no normalizing is required. With that said, do some reading on the subject of brazing 4130... You'll get twicethe number of theories still! Something like two dozen ideas from threeguys. Still, an oxy/acet rig is REALLY handy. If you can oxy/acet to aircraft standards, going TIG later is going to be a piece of cake. I agree the sportair workshopsare great. Dr. Joe (can't remember his last name) who does a lot of teachingof them is really a good instructor. I've sat through a lot of this lecturingduring Air Venture (Oshkosh). I also have sat through his gas weldingaluminum seminars, which are really really good. There's a short video of his on oxy/acet and 4130 on the EAA website (or there'sa link). It's short and really really really (that's THREE reallys) a goodplace to start. Explains a simple rule of thumb procedure (1/8", 45 degrees and90 degrees) for oxy/acet of 4130. This whole welding thing is very cumulative. It's a matter of burning some gas, rods and metal. Like lead poisoning, your brain just collects the info andone day it'll seem a lot easier than before, for no good reason.Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: What welding rod did you use for 4130?

The research that I've done on TIG welding 4130 indicates that post weld normalizingis only needed for metal thicknesses over 1/8". Therefore, for the metalparts on a Pietenpol, very few welds (if any) would require normalizing. Justbe sure to allow the welds to cool slowly, in still air.Bill C.Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: String Theory (Crankcase)

I bought this TIG welder on E-Bay and it does everything as advertized and I thinkis a very good deal.http://www.ebay.ca/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... 41wt_952It was delivered in 3 days, and worked like a charm out of the box. I have donemostly stainless welding with it but did some aluminum for testing and it workedgreat with blunt zirconiated electrodes in AC pulsed mode. Nice cleaningaction. One other quick note which will be valuable for those welding thin materials. I learned to chemically sharpen my tungsten using sodium nitrite which is an inexpensivechemical salt available from chemical supplies (or you could buy aproduct called chemsharp which is the same thing sold in expensive jars!) Chemical sharpening:You get a jar of sodium nitrite. Hold your electrode in a pair of pliers and fireup a propane torch and just heat the tip of the tungsten until it glows redin the flame. Then quickly before it cools dip it in the sodium nitrite powder, moving it in small circles and up and down a little. A reaction takes placeas the oxydizing salt reacts with the hot tungsten and the tungsten is removedforming a beautiful smooth sharp tip. You quickly learn that you can controlthe angle of the sharpening by how far you dip the tungsten into the poolthat forms on the poweder as it melts and reacts. There are no grinding markson the electrode which is what makes the arc wander and difficult to controlon low power thin metal welding where you need fine control. Also grinding releasesfine dust which you don't want to breathe especially if you are using thoriatedtungsten which contains a few percent radioactive thorium. Here's aphoto of a 1/16" lanthanated electrode I chemically sharpened using this technique.Look at the fine tip on it!Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ttachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/shar ... __________
