Hi Garyss is stainless steel. It is an alooy of iron, chromium and nickel. The varietyI use is much stronger than mild steel, as used in the early Piets and slightlyweaker than 4130, which is an alloy of iron, chromium and molybdenum. AISI304 is very TIG weldable too. We use about 2000 tons of it per year for our manufacturing.Happy landingsSemihRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Question re posting progress

Semih,Attached is a photo of my hinge assembly. As you can see, the weight is 24 grams(or about 0.9 ounces), according to my cheap digital scale. Mine are madefrom 16ga (.058") AISI 304 stainless steel, and I polished them up using a buffingwheel and some polishing compound.I have also made a few other fittings from stainless steel, including my controlhorns. I used the same basic design from the 1932 plans (airfoil shape fromlight gauge sheet metal) but I had the blanks punched out using a CNC punch press(+/- .004" accuracy). Very happy with the results, with the added benefitof corrosion resistance offered by the stainless steel.Bill C.Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ttachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/imag ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Question re posting progress

BillTank you very much for your response. I think I was inspired by your hinge design. The only thing is I overbuilt. I have a handicap of 144 grams (5 ounces). If I need weight saving on the tail in the future, I will certainly build newhinges.Did you weigh other stuff? if so, I would very much like to compare figures. My idea of control horns was different. I am posting the photo of the last elevatorhorn.SemihRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ttachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/img_ ... __________

Semih,Here are a couple of my stainless steel parts - aileron horn and elevator horn. The aileron horn is per plans - except that mine are made of 20ga (.037") stainlesssteel. The elevator horn is slightly modified in that I didn't bend themounting flanges per the plans. I have incorporated a separate channel thatwill be welded to the horn (not yet welded in photo). I found that the plansversion would result in a gap between the tabs that is thicker than the woodthat it attaches to, and also that those mounting flanges are quite narrow. As you can see, the aileron horn weighs 181grams (6.4 oz), and the elevator hornweighs 143 grams (5.0 oz).Bill C.Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ttachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/imag ... __________

Beautiful stuff, Bill.As you can see from my previous photo, I found the same thing about flanges. Infact none of my horns are as per plan. I made the cad drawings and cut by laser. The horns in the picture are only trials. I made a further modification ofTIG weld between the mounting flanges and reinforcing flanges. My elevator hornsare even more different. They are asymmetrical. The reason is, I figured outthat the upper control wires to the elevators will rub the leading edge ofthe stab. I didn't like the idea, so I developed a different geometry betweenthe bell crank and horns being a true parallelogram. Both wires are the same length, upper wire does not rub the stab, wires do not get slack. The faults Ilisted are by observation of many Pietenpol photos and the plans. I have the caddrawing if there is any interest. There is a free cad program called Draftsight.Downloadable. 2D version is free, licensed. You can open dwg files, editthem, save them.SemihRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Sun, 17 May 2015 20:13:00 -0400

Attached is a photo of the Vi Kapler cast hinges on the scales... 22.8 grams (0.8oz), with clevis pin (still with unclipped tails) and thin washer. Not tosay one is better than the other (Bill Church's hinges are essentially the sameweight as the cast ones), but if you consider that Semih's hinge weighs 1.4oz and there are 9 of these on the tail of an air camper, the difference in weightfor a set of tail hinges amounts to 5.4 oz (1/3 of a pound). The momentarms on my Air Camper from engine CG to tailwheel are in the ratio of 7:1, sothat the difference in effect on the airplane's CG between Semih's fabricatedstainless hinges and my cast aluminum ones is about the same as adding 2 poundsin the engine compartment. If you have a tail-heavy airplane and you need tomove weight to the nose, you could do the same by shaving weight from the tailin a ratio of about 7:1.Heavier engine Piets don't have to worry too much about this, but the Continentalpowered ones with no electrical system or starter usually do.--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ttachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/hing ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Question re posting progress

I tilted mine back, too...4". It is far more effective than moving the engine forward, and avoids the long-nosed look.Gary BootheNX308MBSent from my iPad> On May 25, 2015, at 12:34 PM, Boatright, Jeffrey wrote:> > I tilted my cabanes back about 3 inches. Can any one of you guys flying with Conti A-65 kindly measure rfom the front cabanestruts to th prop backplate front face? Also, please specify where you carryyour fuel and how much. I think it will help a great deal with my progress.Happy landingsSemihRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

Semih,I just measured mine and from the front of the prop backplate to the bottomattach bolt of the forward cabanes is exactly 48" (1,221.12 mm). My fueltank (15 gallons) is in the wing centersection, between the spars.Jack PhillipsNX899JPSmith Mountain Lake, Virginia-----Original Message-----

Since I have the sheet metal facility, they looked attractive. I just eyeballed the metal thickness. If it comes to weight and balance one day, =C3=A2=82=AC=B9I can easily throw away the present ones and design something lighter. I am sure if I go into calculations, the hinges will come out with a safety factor of something like 20. I did not decide on my conti A-65 location yet. I read somewhere I have to make the nose (actually engine mount) 6" longer or I have to tilt the cabanes back, moving the wing rearwards. I did not like the idea because it shortens the tail moment. It may make things worse. I think I will go as close as possible to the original angle of the cabanes, vertical. Any ideas?> > Happy landings> > Semih> >> On Mon, May 25, 2015 at 6:14 PM, Bill Church wrote:ca>>> >> Of course, there is another option for saving weight on the empennage hinges; one that is even lighter than all of the above.
