Oscar,Ditto, what Jeff stated re: usability of earlier Garmin vs. ForeFlight in the cockpit...As a CAP Pilot, I attended the G1000 classes, and sorta-kinda learned how to usetoday, but forget by morning, which buttons to push, knobs to turn, etc.On the other hand, the iPad w/ ForeFlight is difficult to forget how to use, asit was developed as an intuitive human interface. After having planned and flowndozens of x-c flights here in TX, I wouldn't enter a cockpit without it.In fact, I use the G430 in the Diamond DA-20 I fly as a radio only, as it, too,has an ugly interface which requires near constant study to remain GPS proficient.Happy New Year Blessings to all!--------Tom KreinerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: carburator overhaul

I did my own 6 years ago. I replaced the float needle with the steel one boughtfrom Fresno airparts and followed the manual for adjusting the fuel level. Oscar and Douwe,Thanks for all your comments and thoughts, I find them enjoyable. The other forums are filled with ADSB-in/out, IFR fixes, 2020 requirements and such. The PIETENPOL forum gets right down to the basics of flying. There are not many places where we can enjoy the simple joys of flying without being criticized for out simplistic ways.Although this great poem was written right after John Magee (at about 20 years of age) completed a flight to 33,000' in a Spitfire, it speaks to us who do fly with the larks and Eagles. My prayers are with Matt and his family. His hard work with all the forums helps all of us to fly.High Flight "Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;Sunward I=99ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirthof sun-split clouds, =94 and done a hundred thingsYou have not dreamed of =94 wheeled and soared and swungHigh in the sunlit silence. Hov=99ring there,I=99ve chased the shouting wind along, and flungMy eager craft through footless halls of air....Up, up the long, delirious, burning blueI=99ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.Where never lark, or even eagle flew =94And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trodThe high untrespassed sanctity of space,- Put out my hand, and touched the face of God."Ray KrauseSent from my iPad> On Dec 31, 2015, at 9:52 PM, taildrags wrote:> > > Douwe: would you mind posting a picture of how you have your iPhone set up directly in front of you in the cockpit? Jeffrey,I like your thinking! GPS is just the new version of map and pencil pilotage! Now,if I could keep the GPS in the glove box and have it displayed on the windscreenof my SkyScout, I could fly heads-up and no one would know how I got tomy destination! Just leave an old folded sectional on the seat along with thegoggles!Ray KrauseSent from my iPad> On Dec 31, 2015, at 10:32 PM, Boatright, Jeffrey wrote:> > > Hi Oscar,> > I have a different take on the evolution of technology in the cockpit. The dedicatedaviation GPS units are like other avionics that originated in the steamgauge era. They require mental translation into actual and useful guidance.Conversely, apps like ForeFlight and WingX were developed from the moving mapsmindset. They are much more like simply holding a chart in your hand and flyingby pilotage. Only instead of you trying to follow a line on the chart thatyou drew during preflight prep, the moving map shows you a similar preplannedcourse line PLUS a line or ticker or breadcrumb, etc. that represents how you'reactually progressing across the ground. These apps are simply electronic vesionsof your chart, and thus, I argue, are truer to chart-following pilotagethan the old-thinking, dedicated GPS units.> > Or something like that...> > > Jeffrey H. Jeff, Tom, et al- I was in no way inferring that the Garmin-style GPS navigationtools are more intuitive than a touchscreen on an iPhone or iPad. In fact, that's why I asked Douwe to share a bit more about how he mounts his phone onthe coaming in front of him in the cockpit. I take my phone with me while flying, but only for calling someone if I need to, as in an off-field landing orother emergency. I've tried taking pictures with it while airborne and I cando it, but it's a bit tricky. However, if it was fixed in place in front of me,I could sure manage to pan around in a map screen to find something, or zoomin or out with my fingers.I know what you mean about the G1000. That's what I flew for my last BFR and itwas my first time behind a glass panel. I had watched and studied the Sporty'straining video a couple of times before going to the field, but it's likeyou say- there is too much to remember if you don't use it frequently. I wasabsolutely astonished at the system's capabilities, and it really isn't that difficultto operate it if you stay at it, but I've left that type of flying behindme in the smoke ;o) Now if you tell me you can get a HITS-type "fly throughthe boxes right to the runway threshold" on an iPhone or iPad, that wouldbe awesome! We often have fog or low clouds pop up in a hurry around here, andit's easy to get caught in reduced visibility or "instant IFR". In fact, whenwe have wildland fires in the summer, the viz can drop to IFR in smoke, too.Punching in a highway-in-the-sky would be a very good safety tool to have inthe toolbox.--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: carburator overhaul

Proplock: I have overhauled numerous different Strombergs and my A75 Piet flieswith one that I overhauled from ground zero. I will echo what the others said:take your time, use new parts, and get all the new parts that you can. Mostof these carbs have been tinkered with a number of times over the years so theymay have buggered up screws, old gaskets, missing parts, and metal washerswhere fiber ones are indicated. Use only new gaskets and make sure the gasketsurfaces are clean and flat. If yours has been sitting for a while, you mayhave trouble removing some of the screws that hold things together. Don't forceanything because you will no doubt strip a screw head or mess up some aluminum.Get some good solvent loosen frozen fasteners (one or two of mine tooka week of daily application of solvent to loosen), and good carburetor and partscleaner. For me, the most important rebuild item is the exploded parts diagram because Ifollow it to make sure I have each and every part and as I clean or replace eachpart, I take a highlighter and yellow it out on the diagram so I don't missanything. Note that the Stromberg exploded view diagram has a couple of mistakeson it though!Dedicate a place on your workbench for the carb overhaul... there are too manysmall parts to lose and too many small passages in the carb body to get crud ordust into. Use a good light, keep everything clean, and remember that you'redealing with a mechanically simple but operationally intricate piece of hardwarethat was designed in the 1920s. That's just a few years shy of 100!! Theyare reliable, they work, but they do have their nuances. Here's one of manygood references on these carbs:http://thestrombergspecialist.com/index ... -----Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Fri, 1 Jan 2016 11:37:43 -0600Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Re: carburator overhaul

Steve; just seeing the old flaking shellac as I extracted the oil gallery plugson my A65, I sure wouldn't use it inside my carb. I think it was supposed tobe used as a sealant or thread locker, but we have much better things for thatnow. For sure I wouldn't get shellac anywhere near the air or fuel passagesof my carb! The idle circuit passages in particular, should not be changed inany way and lining them with shellac sounds like a good way to reduce the insidediameter and possibly even obstruct them.If you can find one carb specialist who recommends the shellac treatment, I'lllisten. Old timers, not so much.--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Fri, 1 Jan 2016 14:00:27 -0500 (EST)

Shellac is manufactured as flakes. You then mix it with alcohol. Once mixed ithas a very definite shelf life. Unfortunately that is how it's sold by nearlyall mainstream suppliers. You can still get it in flake form, which lastsmuch much longer, from very high end and specialty paint and finish suppliers, even some high end wood working stores. It's non toxic, used by confectioners. Great for kids toys. It's the medium forFrench polishing. It's alcohol based, and completely non tolerant of alcohol, one reason why gaswith ethanol is a no no in old carbs. It will simply dissolve the shellac.Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

Steve,I like this option as well. I think it is a better option than the DIY Stratuxadsb in. This bad elf has a GPS with it, and I do not believe the Stratux does.If you are wanting this for flying in certain airspace you really need the gps. From what I have read, the refresh rate on the gps inside the iPad, for example,is insufficient for such flying. YMMV.--------Semper Fi,Terry HandAthens, GARead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: BPA Newsletter PDF

Thanks Jack,Have a Happy New Year.New newsletter issue this week. Nice carburetor article by Bob Kachergius. Youare good for three more issues. I think we are in a bit of a lull for family membersdying and becoming quadriplegics. Lost a niece at Thanksgiving on the sideof the family that is allergic to work. She left two nice little kids my wifeand I are trying to deal with. We are using your engine builder to to overhaul a C-85 stroker for one of the trainingCubs. That one swallowed a valve. We had a C-90 on it but a local IA wasdoing some work and decided to start the engine without the throttle cableattached. It went to half throttle, rocked forward on the chocks and made a nicecurly cue out of the propeller. Worse was it trashed the crankshaft and theaccessory case. We found a crank for 7K and decided it would be faster and easierto overhaul the 85. Say Hi to Susan!Best,-john-> On Jan 2, 2016, at 9:09 AM, Jack Textor wrote:> > > Happy New Year Hof! Jeff; you're may have something there... I have seen that blackened alligatoringon old outboard motor fuel tank floats. Whatever the case, it seems like you'vesolved your problem with the small aluminum bottle (non-TSO'd, non-STC'd,probably no FAA Form 337, unlikely that it's in AC 43.13-1B "Acceptable Methods",and not in the Bingelis books, so be careful). The cork float on Scout'sfloat indicator were dipped in epoxy when Corky made it (and there is some subtleserendipity there, too). So far no sign of any problems with Corky's corkfloat, but then again I don't fly auto gas and never have. You should probably attempt expanded flotation testing on yours with somethingbesides pastis though. Ouzo is very good for this, so are mastika, raki, mezcal, aguardiente, and Sambuca. See if the cork floats before you sink.--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: carburator overhaul
