Weight of your wing rib

Post by Zoomboy »

Good morning/afternoon/evening Gentlemen and Ladies,

I’ve just started out on my Pietenpol journey, and today completed my first rib.
It’s a thing of beauty, but in the hand it feels a bit heavier than I would have expected.

So it’s rib #1, a wing tip rib, that has the extra vertical braces etc.
It came out at 257 grams or 9.1oz on the scales.
Not yet varnished.

I’m in Australia so have had to resort to using locally available Hoop Pine for my build.
It’s really nice wood but has a weight penalty compared to Sitka Spruce. About 15% heavier from what I can research.

Does anyone have a similar rib lying around that that they could weigh so I can make a comparison ?
Would like to know early if the final weight of my Piet is going to blow out.

Cheers.

I grabbed one from my stack. It's not an end rib. It weighed in at 229 g.

OK thanks Larry.

Looks like I’m roughly on track then.

Cheers.

I weighed one of the ribs donated to me for the rebuilt of N34KP. It's not a root or end rib and weighs 216.7 grams, about 7.6 oz. Your's sound good.
