Hi all, Tim here. I fly for a living but don’t hold that against me, I also fly for fun and have been around antique airplanes nearly my whole life. I’m the current caretaker of the 626 replica and I’m looking at starting a Sky Scout in the fall. 626 is complete and presentable but it needs some TLC before it can fly again which I can hopefully get done over the next winter so it doesn’t interfere with flying season. As for the Scout project, I haven’t really locked down any details about exactly what I want other than I’ve wanted to build one for a long while now. That build will probably have its own thread started this summer.
In the meantime thanks for having me on the forum and I look forward to contributing where I can.

Welcome, Tim. It will be interesting to hear & see what you intend to implement in your build of a Scout. Well, as long as it doesn't involve beta thrust or Cat IIIc instrument approach capability

Re: New Member
A scout would be interesting. Any thoughts on what you might want to for an engine?
Re: New Member
Just low cost simplicity, as intended. The basic plan is to not get fancy and to keep it light. I know the Air Camper has evolved a bit over the last near-century(!) so the first job is to see if any of that applies to the Sky Scout, or if any should.
Nothing for certain yet but likely either a Ford, or a Continental, or maybe a Verner.Richard Roller wrote: ↑Wed Apr 23, 2025 10:12 am A scout would be interesting. Any thoughts on what you might want to for an engine?

Since the Scout is a single-place, there are some things about the Air Camper than won't play into your build. Most of the rest of it should be much the same, although the classic setup for the main landing gear on a Scout is different from what it is on the Air Camper, in that the Scout has the shock struts running up the sides of the fuselage.

You’re right, not everything will apply but off the top of my head there are things like jury struts and the tie bars under the fuselage and things like that which are worth considering.
Re: New Member
Tim, it sounds like you have studied the plans and other examples of the airplanes enough to get an excellent handle on what goes into building them. You are way ahead of the game!

I see it as I know enough right now to know how much I need to sort out still. It’s a start and when I get a thread going for the project I’ll firm all this up (or most) before any wood gets cut.
Ideally I’d like to see the Scout project go as smoothly as it could.

Hi Tim...
Welcome to phpBB.
Our local EAA Chapter 50 just received a wonderful Pietenpol Air Camper donation. Perhaps you would rather chase some clouds as opposed to be stuck in your shop building things. Only 80 hours on airframe, ready to fly.
Best,
Ed Beer

I"ve been operating a Verner 3 cylinder for a couple of years now. 42 horsepower with a big prop would probably be fine for a Scout. Of course a Ford would be the classic option, but I like the little Verner.Tim wrote: ↑Wed Apr 23, 2025 11:30 amJust low cost simplicity, as intended. I was thinking of one of Verner’s five cylinder engines. There was at least one Velie powered Sky Scout so it could be made to look at home. A radial is my least likely option to go with but that’s a bridge I can cross later.Chuck in Indiana wrote: ↑Fri Apr 25, 2025 3:49 pm I"ve been operating a Verner 3 cylinder for a couple of years now. 42 horsepower with a big prop would probably be fine for a Scout.
