I'm rigging up my smoke system and wonder if you smokers out there (and youknow who you are.) can tell me how you connected your oil tubes to theexhaust pipes?I'm trying to figure out what size orifice I need, and what type of tubingwithstands the heat well as it connects to the hot pipes and just generaldetail stuff like that. Thanks in advance!Douwe________________________________________________________________________________Date: Mon, 13 Feb 2012 07:34:41 -0800 (PST)

Douwe,It's been over a year since I did mine, and remembering that far back isasking a lot of my brain, but here's what I did as best I rememberI made a steel bushing that I threaded for a 1/8" NPT pipe thread. I weldedthat to the exhaust manifold just below the exhaust port for the number 1cylinder (my exhaust manifold is plain carbon steel, not stainless). Oncethe bushing was securely welded in place, I drilled a # 40 hole through thewall of the exhaust stack, centered on the hole in the bushing. Then I justused a steel AN816-2 flared tube nipple to screw into the pipe threadbushing on the exhaust stack. I flared a piece of 1/8" stainless steeltubing and attached it to the nipple with an AN818-2 steel coupling nut. Iran the stainless tubing back from the engine towards the firewall for about12" than transitioned to a piece of rubber tubing that went to my pump. Forthe pump I used a cheap 12 volt windshield washer pump that I bought at anauto parts store.I figured if a # 40 hole wasn't big enough, I could always drill it larger, but it seems to do just fine. I would like to try Canopus 13 or Corvus Oilsometime, like the Big Dogs (including Mike Cuy) use, but at over $500 abarrel, I can't afford it. I just go to Automatic Transmission shops andbeg for old used transmission fluid. They are happy to give it away and itworks well, but doesn't have the staying power of Canopus Oil. If I ever gointo the skywriting business, I'll have to buy the more expensive premiumstuff. Here's a picture Bill Church took last summer at Brodhead:And here's a short video my wife shot when I made my first flight test withthe new smoke system:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DTmKApOPywHave fun!Jack PhillipsNX899JPSmith Mountain Lake, Virginia _____

Subject: RE: Pietenpol-List: for you guys who smoke 'emDouwe,A long while ago I wrote this up and Chris Tracy was kind enough to post it on his Westcoast Piet web page.http://www.westcoastpiet.com/Jack's idea or mine work equally as well, the only differences being that I have stainless (Aeronca Champ from Aircraft Spruce)pipes and used a stainless Swaglok fitting as described below.I ran my metal tubing thru the firewall (with a rubber grommet for chafe protection)then connected it to the poly tubing using a section of rubber hose and hose clamps. Some oil distributor places will sell you 5 gallon pails of the smoke oil but you have to make lots of phone calls to find them inyour area using Google. What you're looking for is basically mineral oil. Some call it cement mold release oil, some use it in bakeryequipment and dentist drills.Mike C.[cid:image001.png(at)01CCEA5B.DE9A4F00]
