I have not flown since 1985, and my old log book was partially damaged inflood. The entries are still legible, and I am assuming that I should juststart a new one. Anyone have any bright ideas?Gary BootheNX308MB________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Turnbuckles for sale

If it's usable, no need to start a new one. It's ONLY for formality anyway. Besure and have an accurate hours flown entry on your physical, as you can usethat to reestablish time in the event of a lost logbook. When I got my piet, I found my little logbook from where I soloed back in highschool. My tailwheel hours and endorsement were the first entries since the early80's! However, it's just fine to keep my piet hours which are primarilylogged for insurance.I haven't kept a log of my commercial hours since I flew for American Eagle fora few months. I only kept that to have a nice professional looking logbook whenI interviewed for major airlines. The records the company keeps makes everythinglegal and I can't even imagine ever having to interview for a flying jobagain. If this one doesn't work out, I'll find something else to do!All of my military hours are in yet different logbooks. You only have to have proof of flying for currency, insurance, requirements fortickets, records of endorsements, etc. Other than wording of endorsements, there'sreally no guidance from the FAA. I've used the whole stack of logbookseven recently to get my CFI. The inspectors don't seem to care that some hoursare in this log, others are in that log, just as long as it's fairly obviousthey're MY records. Honestly, it's still quite a gentleman's system. Probablyone of the last...Personally, I'd keep using the damaged one if possible, kind of neat to still havethat. I'm the sentimental sort.Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

Keep the old one. Even damaged, it would still show some continuity.Allied Van Lines lost my first logbook (I had already started the second oneand managed to keep it). Life would be simpler if I still had it.You'll need a BFR from a Certified Flight Instructor and a medical if youare going to fly as a Private Pilot and carry passengers. If you will beflying as a Sport Pilot, you'll still need a BFR before carrying passengers(I think - I've never dealt with Light Sport pilots as a CFI), but it can beadministered by a Light Sport Instructor, or by a CFI.Jack PhillipsNX899JPSmith Mountain Lake, Virginia _____

Forgot to attach the picture. Thanks, Jack & Tools. I'm leaning toward the sentimental comment that Toolsmade..Duct tape may be the best fix. The binding took the worst of thedamage. If no one pops up with a better idea, then it'll be duct tape.Gary BootheNX308MB

Subject: Re: RE: Pietenpol-List: Log BookI would start a new Logbook. this one will only become more fragile with time.I would put copies of the last two pages in the front of the new Logbook. As far as the binding. If you are not going to be using it. I would leave it alone.Tape can lead to other problems. On this old logbook first make sure that there is no mold or mildew. If there is,the best thing you can do is to take it out in Bright sunlight and make surethat all mold and mildew is exposed for several hours. It can take days to getall the pages. Then Put it in a sealed container with some original Lysol anti-bacterialliquid in the bottom. Killing the mold/mildew is essential. Thenstore it in a dry place.Everyone might consider scanning/copying their Logbooks and keeping them in hardcopy and/or digits. Keep them separate from the originals, IE in hanger andat home. If you have a fire you don't want them all burned up. Then you canscan your new pages as they fill up. (You might consider doing this with anyimportant photos as well.)I was a Museum Curator before 9-11 changed my life with multiple deployments andI have had multiple experiences with recovery from fires, floods and tornadoes.(Most fire recovery has more to do with water damage than fire damage.) Yeah, Gary. I have started new log books several times. Just keep the old log book and transfer the total hours from the old one to the first page of the new one. I'm going to start a new log book with my biannual review when I get far enough along to get one. Don't want to get the review too far in advance -- I might forget how all over again. One never forgets how. Just get a bit of practice in another airplane before you fly the Piet for the first time. Chuck PS The corvair is just about ready for its first run.
