Hello,I did a mistake and I have two choices to correct it. I am covering the rudderand stabilizer of the piet to practice with the process and .. finish some parts. When I cover the rudder, I put the elevator horn in place of the rudder horn...two or three months ago, and I just discover the error ( I dcide to coverthe stabilizer now and when I was searchin for the horns I saw I have two ofdifferent size!!).The solution of course is replace the horn .. of course, but for that I have tocut the cover (it is painted now) and recover this place..The other option is make an other horn, and keep the rudder horn smaller than theone designed for the Piet.My question is.. is there any trouble in keeping the small horn in the rudder orI have to change it?.. Lots of you have flown the Piet..may be you can guideme about this little problem.Thank you and regardsMario--------Mario Giacummohttp://vgmk1.blogspot.comRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

Mario,Do the right thing. Uncover the rudder enough to remove the incorrectly installed horn. Not only will this be easier than making a new horn but leaving the smaller horn on the rudder will change the geometry of the rudder control.Greg Cardinal----- Original Message -----

I agree with Greg, Mario. If you put a smaller horn on the rudder than itwas designed for, two things will happen: Rudder pedal forces will go up,and rudder sensitivity will increase. I can't predict how this will affectthe handling of the airplane, but I can say that if built as designed, therudder on this airplane feels just about perfect - light forces on therudder bar and just the right sensitivity and rudder authority. I would notrecommend changing the design, but would cut the fabric off and do itcorrectly.Don't worry - you are not the first to make a mistake building this (or anyother) airplane. I'm in the process of packing to move from my house inNorth Carolina to our new home at Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia and as Ipacked up my workshop I found a whole box of scrap parts I produced whilebuilding my Pietenpol. I actually built about one and a half Pietenpols, judging from all the parts that I made that I later determined were not goodenough to trust my life to. Part of the educational process in building aplane is learning through painful experience that mistakes must becorrected, even if it means doing some tasks over again.Jack PhillipsNX899JPSmith Mountain Lake, Virginia-----Original Message-----

Don't forget farther movement. Banging rudder into elevators is not a good thing. :-)Even with proper horn I have bar stops to keeprudder one inch away from elevators.Clif>> I agree with Greg, Mario. DouweI used pin striping Vinyl to 'edge' a trim colour I painted on my aircraft. It was 8mm wide (3/8") and worked very well as the vinyl will follow bends if laiddown gently.Press it home firmly with a soft cloth or rag once in position and there it stays.Having had a $8000 paint job on an earlier 'plastic' Airplane I had built I useda roller and polyurethane paint during this refurbishment of this one.The pin striping gave a quality finish. Here is an example of a supplier in UK. http://www.the4all.com/hometape.htmlReg ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: pinstriping tape

Hey Douwe,This is the stuff I use.http://www.tptools.com/Product.aspx?display_id=106Great stuff. The guys that paint flames on motorcycles and cars use this becauseit is very flexible. The key is to press it down firmly. I use the back ofmy fingernail to get a really good seal. To really ensure no leak through, spray a little of the base color along the edge of the tape or a little cleardope. Just a very fine layer. This will seal the edge. Then spray your trimcolor. The other key is to pull the tape off at nearly a 180 degree angle andpull it off at the right time. Sometimes that time is 20 to 30 minutes afterspraying. But if the trim color starts to lift at all, stop! Wait a while.I don't like to wait more than 2 to 3 hours though because the paint startsto lose a little of its flexibility to cut a fine line when the tape is pulled.Very satisfying when you get it right! I recently used the 1/4" tape for thestar insignia on the L2 I recently did.Don EmchNX899DERead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ttachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/img_ ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Horn mistake....

Good question. Maybe we put so much time into making them that even thoughthey're bad, we can't bear to throw them away. Mine are gone now, though, unless they are big enough pieces of steel to be useful to make somethingelse. For example, there is the spreader bar I built for my landing gearwith one end flattened to the correct angle, and the other end alsoflattened, but at some odd angle to the first end. No way to fix it, but Idon't want to throw away a 4' length of tubing with two flattened ends. Jack PhillipsNX899JPSmith Mountain Lake, Virginia-----Original Message-----

Gary,Come down and spend a weekend or week days with me. We will fly the piet all weekendto get you up to speed and comfortable with it. I think the insurance companywould consider it duel time since I have so much time in them. In fact, that would be a good question for them. Even if they don't it would be a goodtransition for you.--------Scott LiefeldFlying N11MS since March 1972Steel TubeC-85-12Wire WheelsBrodhead in 1996Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Log Book
