You're welcome Jim, and Jeff. If you had to miss one, this year's weather helpedmake it one to miss. It was still a great time of course, fun and fellowshiphad despite the heat, but we could have done with a break from our deep Southsummer up North. :-)Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Knots or MPH

I live in the Blue Ridge mountains in Virginia. A straight line between here and Brodhead requires climbing to 6500=99, which I=99ve done on many occasions. It takes a while.I have my airspeed in mph and a 0-10,000=99 altimeter.Jack PhillipsNX899JPSmith Mountain Lake, Virginia

Hi Pieters and greetings from Tasmania,I started my subscription to this forum a few years back and kept my head down during the =91flame wars=92, not wishing to appear stupid asking questions that had probably been asked many times before. I think the tone of the forum has been very positive in the past 18 months or so, and I look forward to reading the days digest of posts each evening. This is where I am currently at:I have completed all the wing ribs and both sides of the fuselage. I am presently connecting the two fuselage sides. It=92s winter here, so working in the shed is limited to short bursts.I=92m using a Ford engine and it is currently being re-furbished by a local machinist with considerable experience with old Ford engines. The bore needs to come out 60 thou and the crankshaft has gone 20 thou over. On inspection it was found that one of the original babbit main bearings was damaged. Overhauling it would have meant re-pouring and line drilling the babbits, a very costly procedure (but one he recently carried out for a mate rebuilding a T-Ford). My mate (a T and A Ford man for over 60 years) advised against re-babbiting due to the cost and also the fact that Ford originally used a tin based babbit metal, whereas the babbit material supplied these days is lead based and vastly inferior (according to my learned friend).Consequently, I have had the block machined to take insert bearings. Costly, but I can re-furbish the engine easily in the future if needed. The plans show the tachometer drive coming off the front of the camshaft. By my calculation this would require a pretty long drive shaft to the gauge. Question to those running Ford motors: have any of you taken the drive from elsewhere ( I was thinking maybe off the redundant distributor drive)? The other question I have regarding the Ford motor is the temperature gauge. My 1927 Overland Whippet was like the A Fords; the temperature gauge was a Boyce Motometer stuck in the radiator cap. Can=92t see that would be practical in the Piet (for one thing, you would have to stand up to read it), so I wonder how and what type of sensor is used. Some have a resistance type sensor which require a power source. Many thanks, and the forum lives on. As Mark Twain said =93The report of my death was an exaggeration=94.Respectfully,David BoarderLaunceston, Tasmania, AustraliaThe ox is slow, but the earth is patient.________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Knots or MPH

Every airplane I've flown, from the Fleet 80 Canuck in 62 through Citabria and Chiefmost recently have been in mph. Apparently all the makers after WW2 did that tolook faster. :-)It won't matter so long as your V numbers are the same.Clif Handle every Stressful situation like a dog.If you can't eat it or play with it,Piss on it and walk away. John, I was checking the pitot system and the front and rear read different! I checked fittings and seals. Then I realized the front is in mph and the rear in knots. ________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: this list
