Group,The list has been pretty quiet so I will share some news from out West. Two weeks ago there was a Pietenpol (GN-1) crash into the Great salt lake in Utah. The pilot survived and was in good condition after the crash. The account was told by the pilot to my hangar neighbor who knows that I am building my Pietenpol. He said the pilot was very open about the crash and the events there after. I posted pictures of this Piet several years ago as it sat covered by a foot of snow on our ramp. The owner bought it and brought it to our little Skyport. I never saw it fly, just saw it sitting for years. The owner decide to sell and had the annual done and some work on the fuel system. The Pilot of the downed Piet is very experienced but not so much in a Pietenpol. He was flying the Piet to another airport and had to cross the Great Salt lake. After only 15 min in the air the engine quit and down she came. The pilot stated the water sure came up faster than what was expected, I guess he didn't realize Pietenpols glide like a brick. On impact with the water the pilot was restrained nicely by the shoulder harness. The plane went up on its nose and settled back and floated. At some point the pilot exited the aircraft to the water but when the plane did not sink right away he crawled back up on it and wrung his shirt out and "probably his shorts". He managed to keep his hand held radio and was able to communicate with ATC. Within a few minutes shrimp spotting planes from out over the lake found him and he was picked up by a brine shrimp boat then transferred to a State park rescue boat. The plane has since been recovered and is now listed for sale. It is a steel tube Piet GN-1 with an A-65. I have no association with owner or any vested interest in the plane other than passing on the classified Ad that is now posted. Attached is a picture of the recovered plane on a trailer and the online Ad. https://www.ksl.com/?nid=218&ad=4197958 ... cid=3Happy PietenpolingBrianSLC-UT________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Pietenpol kit from Aircraft Spruce for sale- lostmy FAA med
