What size streamline tubing do you use for the wing struts since theplans don't reflect modern day sizes.Brad SchultzNX899BSOn the gear and time to work on the wings.________________________________________________________________________________

This problem has occured to me also, and when I saw the prices involved Inext wondered what size round tube would work well(I plan to fair in withwood). In addition, what sizes should be used to avoid nessecity of jury struts?Cheers, Steve Yahn>What size streamline tubing do you use for the wing struts since the>plans don't reflect modern day sizes.>>Brad Schultz>NX899BS>On the gear and time to work on the wings.>>________________________________________________________________________________

Steve,At Brodhead '96, there was a Piet with beautiful laminated wood struts. Theylook GREAT and have to be mucho less expensive than steel tubing...alsolighter, I'll wager. Someone in the Pietenpol group will undoubtedly be ableto identify said aircraft and builder. I have the information, but cannotlocate it at present. God luck!Don Cooley________________________________________________________________________________

Hi DonYes I've seen some wood strut stuff here somewhere on the Piet site. I likethe idea sort of. Would the strut crossed wires need to help with the liftloads and be bigger?Does the math work out for the drag, compression column, buckelresistance, etc. compared to steel tube? I mean, it must have been veryexpensive for Barney P. too,and he still chose it. I'm wondering if hefigured it both ways and chose steel because it just made more sense. Anythoughts?Cheers,Steve Yahn>Steve,>At Brodhead '96, there was a Piet with beautiful laminated wood struts. I have finally gotten home with the new to me project DJ put so much time and effortinto.and hopefully in the near future can start making progress on it.ButI had concerns about using the Aluminum wing struts before Talking to OscarZuniga, and he assured me that both he and others are flying them and doing fine(asin staying alive I assume) but I did think of an alternate source for streamlinedmaterial.I haven't measurd my old Tri-pacer yet to see if they are longenough without splicing, but there are many folks flying the old Ragwing Pipersthat have gone to the Univair sealed struts to do away with the repetitivetesting requirement. And they have their old struts laying around and would sellthem hopefully at a reasonable cost.So if anyone thinks they are interestedin getting some I have a friend that is on the Shortwing Piper club sit and canforward some names.RaymondRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

I'm nowhere near that point of construction but I've heard about the cub wing strut swap-out that a lot of people did (or were required to do). I think Walt had mentioned that if you poke around there are a lot of old cub wing struts sitting up in the rafters of hangars. Not sure how they hold up in storage but I'd be interested in getting a set in airworthy condition if the price was reasonable. Thanks,Glenn W. Just a quick fyi..One of my colleagues has a spare set of wing struts for a Piper J-5. Don't knowif these would be modifiable for a builder on this forum, or if someone is interested. He lives out on long island, ny. I'd leave his cell phone here, butnot sure if its proper to do that on a forum though..--------L.Metzel KLNCA65-8N2308CAN HardwareAirframe 712TTW72CK-42 SensenichStandard Factory GN-1Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Wing Struts
