Welcome Garth, One of the first Pietenpols built in Canada, Rouyn-Noranda Quebec in themid thirties, would have to back into my Recreational Flyer library toverify, had a small five cylinder Velie radial 65 hp +AEA-1900 and spent itswhole life on floats and skis. I can't see any reason why it shouldn't bepossible to do it again using newer power. If you need more info I'll try tofind the issue. Is there an RAA chapter in your area? It really helps toassociate with other builders.John McHappy New Year Folks-----Original Message-----

Garth,There is definitely a precedent regarding Pietenpolfloatplanes here in Canada. There was one in theToronto area a few years back. As I recall, it had alarger engine than the norm and reportedly was agood performer on floats---although there couldn'thave been much room for baggage or cargo. I readabout it in THE INTERNATIONAL PIETENPOL NEWSwhich was (is??) published by the International Pie-tenpol Association. I'll see if I can locate that issueof the IPA News and get back to you with details.Speaking of the IPA, does anyone out there have anyidea what happened to it? I sent in my membershipdues several years back, together with an article andphotos. Bob Taylor wrote to acknowledge receipt ofsame and I have had no communication since. Verystrange....The IPA News was published whenever they had enoughmaterial to put together an issue. I really enjoyed gettingthat little publication and have missed it very much sinceit stopped coming. For years, I have been going to join the Buckeye Pietenpol Association, butnever seemed to get +ACI-a round tuit+ACI-. I'll haveto get a money order tomorrow and stop procrastinating.Back to you, Garth: Pietenpols are excellent skiplanes+ADs- Itest flew mine on skis and have flown it quite a lot fromsnow-covered fields and lakes. Its only shortcoming as askiplane is that it has a lousy heater+ACE- Generally, an airplanethat flies well with skis will also do well on floats becauseits takeoff/landing speed is not too high and it generateslots of lift at relatively low airspeeds.Cheers,Graham Hansen________________________________________________________________________________

What did you expect for a buck. Postage was 35 cents. I built my planeusing his plans and I think it turned out good. True you can't move thewings around but how often are you going to be replacing the engine anyway?Put the wings in the correct position the first time and there is no needto move the wings. jas>Just rec a one page flyer from John Grega on his imatation piet. Michael Cuy e-mailed the info re: how to contact you and get on board withthe Piet discussion /chat group. I have been a member of BPA for severalyears and am well along with my "A" powered Piet. I have been one of thoseweb holdouts but have decided the world is passing me by so I might as welljoin the crowd. Besides I best get surf literate before the end of the yearwhen Grant will no longer be the newsletter editor and I'm concerned that itmight not be in existence or as good a product.Like most begginers at the whole computer thing, I'm feeling my way but ammore confident each day. Please let me know when I am authorized toparticipate with your group. I'm looking forward to getting acquainted andsharing our Piet knowledge.
