I took a walk arount the local airplot the other day looking at tire on airplanes and found a set on a big tirbine twin of size 18x5.5 goodyear. They were tall, looked like they held lots of air, and I think they would look good on a piet type craft.Problen is, I can't find them in wicks, or acs. Where does a guy find these tires? How much are they?Do these tires seem practical?Bob________________________________________________________________________________

Bob, You surely could find those tires somewhere in a Trade-A-Plane, but I'm afraid they're gonna be real expensive. Those things are also pretty heavy, since they're designed for high weights, speeds and pressures, they might not be the best choice for a Piet, but you're right, they sure look cool!Gary MeadowsRib #3 Done, #4 in the jig, 4 more sticks bending, and all rib sticks cut (it's starting to feel real...)________________________________________________________________________________Date: Sun, 07 Nov 1999 10:28:27 -0600

Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: airplane tiresBob,Another good question to ask is, "How much do they weigh?" Some ofthese large aircraft tires are very heavily built. They need to be manyplys thick to stand up to a muliple thousands pounds of airplane ifsomeone drops it in.________________________________________________________________________________

Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: airplane tiresBob, Those tires and wheels would be awfully heavy for a Piet. You wouldhave to go to an aircraft supply house like Aviall or OmniAir to gettires like those and they would be very expensive, probably in theneighborhood of $300.00 ea. We got our wheels and brakes from salvage yard in Washington State andwe only paid a little over $300.00 for them. They came from a 140 HPCherokee and were the standard 6.00 X 6 Cleveland's. The dealer alsosent us an extra set of slave cylinders incase there was some corrosionin the originals - not an uncommon occurance. I was able to grab hold ofa pair of really good used tires from where I worked, so tires cost usnothing.John LangstonPipe Creek, TXnle97(at)juno.com________________________________________________________________________________
