Pietenpol-List: Non-stick wing ribs, another view for the record

For building my Wagabond ribs, I made the fixture base from 2X4's and3/4-inch particle board. Then I went to the local hardware store and boughtsome sheet clear acetate material.I got some plotter vellum at work and traced the rib drawing using somegigantic French curves that an associate -- who formerly was an engineer atBoeing in pre-computer days-- had. I taped the tracing to the fixture baseand laid the acetate over the top. Then I nailed my wood blocks to thefixture where they were needed.I use strips of wax paper where needed when I am gluing up each rib, to keepthings from sticking to the blocks. I don't staple the gussets, but use aglass plate on top of the glued-up rib with about 100 lbs of water jugs ontop of it.So far, so good. More than 3/4 done at this point and I've had to replace acouple of small areas of the acetate in high wear areas. Holding up well, all in all. Wouldn't do it this way for a production fixture, obviously, butfor a few parts like this, it works fine.Between this fixture and a counter top laminate edge-trimming router bit forfinal cleanup prior to sanding, the ribs are coming out great.I am using Titebond II for glue. This is an aliphatic resin glue that iswaterproof. Very strong and works great. The company where I work uses thissame glue for assembling organ consoles, because it is strong and holds upseemingly forever.Mike________________________________________________________________________________Date: Mon, 13 Mar 2000 14:50:14 -0800 (PST)
