Whilst daydreaming the other day about build a Piet, a question poped into my head about the Air Camper. Did Mr. Pietenpol make any provisions for checking to see if there is any water in the fuel tank, and if so, draining it? Perhaps this is a feature planes didn't have till long after his time.Richard________________________________________________________________________________

Subject: Pietenpol-List: Fuel TankKip: To get more fuel capacity in the wing, consider a flat bottom tank(like Kerri Price's), rather than BHP's design with the tapered tankfloor. Price also offers drawings for gapless wing root-center sectionconnection. No flashing and screws. As far as the front door goes, I'msure I will come to love it. Making it wasn't a problem or any more workthen any other sub assembly of the plane. (however I spent a yearbuilding the center section--that sucker was a problem!) If you make thedoor, you must do it before you put the fus. sides together. As I saidbefore, Price's stuff is all top notch, bit his Aircamper, with all hisgoodies added was heavy. (I think around 730 lbs. as I recall) I'm usinghis fuel tank, and gapless aileron (piano hinge) drawings, and of coursethe front door. Good luck with your bird. I was just looking at tanks last night. Wag-Aero has new tanks for $440 plus another$110 for straps, plus shipping. Your find sounds like a good deal.ChuckRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Fri, 19 Nov 2010 00:10:25 -0800

Hi GuysJust about to order some aluminum for my wing tank I have been through the archivesand see most people are using 5052 is there a reason to use 5052 rather than6061?Also thickness 0.040 or 0.050 seem to be the thickness used has anyone found thisto be to thin? And while I am at it what grade and thickness have people used for there cockpitcoaming ?ThanksCarsonRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

Carson,You will want to stick with 5052, if for no other reason than it's fareasier to bend than 6061. Mine is .040 and sealed with Pro-seal. The firstair test found two leaks...patched those, then did a fuel test and do leaksat all!...very easy.Gary-----Original Message-----

Hi Carson,I used .050 for the tank. That thickness is good, but I have had some weld breakage problems because of my lousy design. The edges next to the welds should be stiffened by putting a "trough" with a roller along side the weld edge. Better to look and follow Bingelis books and look at existing fuel tanks out there. If mine gives me any more problems I will start completely over again. My front engine cowl is .030, 3003 alloy. This is soft enough to form bump-outs around bolt heads, and installing louvers and such. The sections that formed the "pit" areas I used .030 , 2024 alloy for stiffness. it's probably overkill but I had to replace a Harley clutch cable once on the road.I got a generic cable from a shop in Denver and it was really heavy duty-nice outer housing and good smooth operation. if the lengths could be found ata motorcycle shop you need it might be an option-could likely find that typepart searching onlineRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Fuel Tank

Thanks for the repliesI ended up getting a sheet of 5052 locally .063 as that was the thinnest they hada little thicker but hopefully a bit easier to weld. I cant seem to find anything in the Bingelis book about welding aluminum fuel tanks.I will spend the weekend reading from cover to cover to find itCarsonRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________
