I believe I've asked this a while back, but lost it, so accept my apologies. Two questions.1. what handheld radio should I purchase. Something simple just tocommunicate.2. Is your radio range acceptable or should I look into adding anexternal antennae of some kind.Thanks!Douwe________________________________________________________________________________Date: Fri, 16 Mar 2012 06:44:15 -0700 (PDT)

Hi Douwe,I like any of the Icom line. Check them out here.http://www.mypilotstore.com/MyPilotStore/secd/12They have hard to beat prices too.As an EE, I absolutely recommend an external antenna. Especially if you fly cross country. Be sure to build in a ground plane to mount it to.Jeff WilsonSt. Louis, MOFuse done, no gear yetWings done, need brace wires yetA-65/Hegy semi-scimitar Sent from my iPhoneOn Mar 16, 2012, at 8:30 AM, "Douwe Blumberg" wrote:> I believe I=99ve asked this a while back, but lost it, so accept my apologies.> > Two questions> > what handheld radio should I purchase. Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: hand help radio questionIn my buddies 1947 Aeronca Champ we use:an old ICOM AC21 with an external antenna put in the cargo area behind the rearseat (not mounted outside the airplane.) (available for about $100 used on Ebay)with an Sigtronics SPO22 Intercom (around $200) with PTT built into the stick.and 2 Lightspeed ANR 15 XLC headsets (NOS for $400 each when the New model Zulucame out)All put into a fixed mount beside the front pilot where the rear pilot can reachit. There is an option to use a small motorcycle battery mounted under the front seat, but it is more hassle to recharge than the ICOM Battery and so it not oftenused. We get about 5+ miles range and it is very reliable. In My 1947 Vtail Bonanza I use and ICOM AC21 with the short rubber whip and gets3-4 mile range. The ICOM AC21 also has the ability to navigate to VORs but the Champ mount isnot set up for it and it is a hassle to do freehand. Especially since I now needreading glasses to read the panel. Blue Skies,Steve D----- Original Message -----

Funny story. Couple years ago at OSH I bought a handheld radio (plus a bunch ofother stuff at the same time) from Aircraft Spruce at their booth.Later that night I started looking though all the goodies I'd bought. Got to thethe radio's box, opened it up - and NO RADIO! Had all the manuals, charger, batteries, etc, but the radio itself wasn't there...Long story short, the guys at the ACS booth had been displaying that particularradio at their counter. I called them on the phone and eventually convincedthem that I wasn't trying to pull one over on them (after all, who would buy anempty radio box...?).They eventually figured out what happened and I got my radio (plus $20 for my trouble).- Pat--------Patrick Hoyt601XLb/CorvairN63PZ - 99.999% done....Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

Another vote for the Icom radios... although I have also heard good things aboutthe Vertex line... makers of Yeasu products. Quick story, and nothing about getting the most out of your radio or any of thatboring stuff... LOL! I was flying the first leg of my long cross-country severalyears ago from Tulsa to Springfield, MO. On my solo training flights Ialways carried my flight bag, to include handheld radio and GPS, just in caseI got turned around. So, I'm flying along and getting near Springfield... asI reach up to tune the old radio to listen to traffic, the knob slips right offinto my fingers! I thought, no biggie, I'll just slip it back on and then keepit handy for whenever I need to change freqs, but when I looked at the knobI noticed that there was no flat, just a round shaft and a set screw! Whata terrible design, especially for an airplane radio! So, I was out of luck onusing the panel radio. The only thing that kept me from having to use lightsignals to land was my Icom A-22. I grabbed it and the Y-adapter from my bag, hooked it up and was able to contact Springfield approach loud and clear about10 miles out. I just threw the HT on the dash and pressed on with the restof my flight... my next stop was Chanute, KS and then back home to Tulsa. TheA-22 worked fine just sitting on the dash... no ground plane, no feedline issues, just the ol rubber duckie... Ha! Yes, I'm just being a smart aleck. No, this is not how I'll use it in the Piet.--------Mark ChouinardWings, Center Section and Empannage framed up - Working on FuselageRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

I bought an A14 and in attempting to put somefrequencies in memory screwed it up so baddealing with the silly instructions I almostthrew the thing across the room. Stayed myhand though, with extreme difficulty!!Ah, but then I went to Utube and found awhole flock of instruction vids on the variousfunctions including the memory stuff. A few minutes of work I have twelve frequencies in the memory!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2D2lJUoIjlwI tell you! this is NOT like the written instructions!!!Clif"There's nothing remarkable about it.All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right timeand the instrument plays itself."~Johann Sebastian Bach Hey Douwe, I have the ICOM A6 with an antenna back in the fuse. I like it and it gets good reception but it is not user friendly . I have to get the manual to figure out what I am doing.
