Thanks Mike! Will keep that in mind when I get back to my axle.JohnWhat happened is that after about 280 hours of flying the anti-torque tubesbroke off where they are weldedto the bottom of the axle. I believe that several factors contributed tothis. 1) I should have used thicker wall tubing for these parts. 2) Mytolerance between the "pin/tube" and the "collar" or tube sliding thru atube were too sloppy.3) every time you apply the brakes, the axle wants to rotate forward underthe bungee wraps. This is normal and is exactly what the anti-torque systemis designed to stop. (along with keeping your axel from moving left toright under the bungees when you make turns, etc.) This slight rocking orrotating slightly forward of the axle puts a flex load on thosetube-in-tube, anti-torque pins and bends them slightly. After thousandsof applications of the brakes this rocking, flexing, and bending createdenough slop so that the axle actually would rotate forward about 3/4" whenI would apply the brakes and thus make my brake cables too short andapplying more and more brake the more the axle rotated forward. I waswondering why my brakes were actually becoming increasingly more effective! Ha !Big dummy didn't figure it out in time so one day about 2 weeks ago whiledoing a run up the brakes wouldn't release and more power bent/sheard theanti-torque tubes right off. Make your tolerances tight and keep thepins greased.I think Carl Loar has a sketch of my system on his web site possibly if youcan't envision the system from the pics.Mike C.________________________________________________________________________________Date: Wed, 23 Oct 2002 19:35:30 -0700

Hi Mike,Many thanks for the warning! I made my pins pretty thick (.058" wall) but Imight see if I can make them thicker, and I'll watch the slop. Did theyboth break at once? I would think that would be better than only onebreaking.Jack-----Original Message-----

I asked this same question to my FSDO Inspector a few years ago. He said to usethe paragraph in my flight limitations that deals with major changes as a guidelinefor returning to flight. He said it was not necessary to contact him,but recommended that you essentially place yourself back into "phase I" and flyoff 5 hours in your flight test area and afterwards write the same statementin the logbook that you wrote after your initial Phase I was complete "I certifythat the prescribed flight test hours have been completed and the aircraftis controllable throughout its normal range of.... yada yada yada." Straight from the horses mouth.--------David GallagherZodiac 601 XL-B: flying, 200+ hours nowNext project under construction: AircamperRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________
