Ed,We didn't keep a list of the hardware we have used. I can see wherethere could be a wide range of hardware depending on wether onemade the one piece wing or the 3 piece wing, or the 3/4" spar or the1" spar, used the "improved" type landing gear or the spreader barlanding gear or even used Cub landing gear, what type hinges wereused for the ailerons and the empenage and even the type of tailwheel and springing. It seems there could be quite a bit of difference used from plane toplane. I know that I experianced "future shock" as time went alongwith each new hardware purchase, as in "what future purchase costwould shock me next".RodgerPiet in progress________________________________________________________________________________

Hello, to allI must take this moment to respond with a question concerning the mentioningof "3/4" and or 1" spars" in one of the recent inputs to this list. I haveyet to receive my plans, but have been doing much research on theconstruction of the wings. My question is, what thickness of spars areused in the 3 piece wings? and why two different thickness mentioned? wouldsomeone please explain. I also would like to say many thanks for everyone'sinput on this list, as it has greatly educated me in the process of buildinga great Pietenpol.MerrillPiet builder, Mt. Steve,I started down that route too. I got all of the parts I paid for, but neverfigured out what plane some of them were for. Some turned out to be useful. The metalwork is part of the fun. Get yourself a metal cutting bandsaw fromGrizzly (about $200), a big vise, a big grinder, and some files, and startcutting out the easy parts. The Bengelis books have enough information toget you started. Make up a set of mild steel radiused jaws for the vice tobend parts over. I have one jaw at (approximately) .090 radius and one at(approximately) .063. I bend 13-14 gauge parts to the back and 16 gaugeparts forward.Start learning how to do your own welding. I did crafts-related eveningclass at the University, then bought a gas rig and started burning up gas.The Pietenpol design is such that most of the welds are eithernon-structural, or if structural, not heavily loaded. For example, nothinghappens if the elevator hinge welds fail--they don't support hold anythingin flight.Take your work to the local EAA gatherings and ask for opinions. You'll bethe center of attention, and you'll find the people who actually have adviceto give. You'll also find out who is good at the critical stuff and likesto do it for airplanes in your area. You'll also get a pretty good feelingfor what you feel comfortable doing, and what you really want done by aprofesional. At this point, you'll have your own network, and not need myadvice anymore.Gene HubbardSan Diego -----Original Message-----

Steve,I started off the same way, but then found there were too many pieces that Ihad to custom fit anyway. All of the pieces are critical, otherwise theywouldn't be there. But they're not all hard to make. Don't think of havingto make everything right the first time. Try it, let people look at it, andmaybe do it over. I have lots of funny-shaped scrap pieces. Except for thelift struts, the raw material cost is almost insignificant. A couple ofmonths ago, someone on the list commented on the freedom of "real"homebuilding in that we don't have to pay a lot of money and wait for a newone. In any case, enjoy the experience.Gene________________________________________________________________________________

Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Wing fittings questionTed,I fought this problem for weeks.Right or wrong this was my solution.1. Used 1/8 birch on either sides of the spar at root and strut positions. This gave me a full 1 inch between steel fittings.2.In order for the wing fittings to fit outside the center section fittings, I planed down the center section spars so as to make the fit the correct size by using 1/16 plywood on either sides of the center section spars .080 + .0625+ 0.715 + .0625 + .080Steel+Plywood+CS Spar+Plywood+SteelHope this makes sense and more hopefully I hope it holds together when my gracious, good looking, handsome, wealthy and able test pilot flys like a big bird.Corky in the middle of the night in La working on that building log for the FAA man.________________________________________________________________________________Date: Sat, 27 Apr 2002 00:18:10 -0700Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Hardware

the zinc plated nicopress sleeves are for stainless cables. copper would be usedfor galvanized. As for pins/bolts on fork ends. You can do it either way. I am using clevis pinswith washers and cotter pics to secure my forks, but short AN bolts with locknuts would work equally well.DJ Veghwww.imagedv.com/aircamper ----- Original Message -----

You can't use lock nuts with the shackles. But you can use cotter keyswith a drilled shank bolt with a castle nut. A nylock nut is not approvedas the bolt can rotate.Just about 100% of the applications use a clevis pin and cotter key. Thehardware supplier should be able to tell you what size clevis is normallyused with the specific size of shacle you are using.chris bobka----- Original Message -----

Larry,Happy to hear about your award at Oshkosh and your comments about youreactions.Didn't make to Brodhead for the first time in 7 years; it appears thar Imissed a 'good'one. Hopefully next year.Trying to do the color coat painting but its been, hot , wet and humid.Went over to see Bud Roger's "A" ; he has it in his prototype SE-5fuselage. I was impressed, he had it turning a 76 x 42 prop at over 2500RPM. I think the dual Solex carbs and the modified cam are adding to theperformance significantly. He has a dual ignition which is currentlyusing two coils and a Mazda 8 wire distributer. What kind of a mag are using in your A ?Regards,Lou----- Original Message -----

OK, Gary. I received your Christmas present late Saturday, Dec 17. Thank you so very much. I would be willing to at least pay the shipping charges. You are so kind. I looked on our US road atlas yesterday to see if I could find Cool, Cal. It's not listed in the back of the book. It must be just a "wide place in the road." Can you tell me where it is?Did you have any problems laying out the holes in the crush plate to get them to line up perfectly with the holes in the prop? I'm not a machinist and I want to be sure I get it right. What method did you use? Until you are better paid, Chuck----- Original Message -----
