After having driven VW diesels (3 of which have been and/or are TDI's), I too,have looked into converting the TDI into an aircraft engine. There are many considerations,including the fuel system, removal of many accessory pads on theblock, and the like. That said, the engine is a real dynamo; our current JettaTDI runs like a scalded cat.The long block weighs roughly 260 lbs., and the completed engine with accessoriesweighs roughly 350 lbs. The final weight depends on the shipping pallet, etc.These are now becoming so popular, that I've seen complete (rebuildable ) engineswith a few minor issues for as low as $400.In order to convert, you really only need a crankshaft mount for the prop hub,and that would need to be carefully designed (right up my alley). There are afew resources on the 'Net discussing Torque, which, rather than horsepower, iswhat swings the prop. The VW has loads of torque, and would do a great jobof swinging a Piet prop.As for the turbo... Whatever you do, DON'T install a larger turbo. The turbo issized to the displacement and rpm's of the engine, and changing the size ofeither inlet or outlet rotors (or the input - output ratios) will most likelychange the torque characteristics of the engine. If you have access to a SuperFlow900 series engine dyno, along with a selection of different turbos, however,you might get lucky and be able to test your way to increased power, torque,something, maybe? Kind of doubt it, but it would be fun trying.Personally, with over 1M miles on VW diesels, and over 400K miles on TDI's, I'dleave the turbo as is. If you want to improve the life of any turbo, there are a few rules:1. Never rev the engine at startup and this will destroy dry turbo bearings. The bearings are sleeve bearings, and the turbo will not have lubrication untilfull oil pressure has been reached. Wait 6 to 10 seconds.2. Never shut the engine down fast... allow it to cool for at least 15 secondson a warm day, and at least 60 seconds after highway driving.. like when youpull in for gas, er, I meant diesel.3. Always, always, make sure the oil is exactly as the mfr. describes in the literature;NEVER deviate, as you'll be looking for trouble. In VW's in particular,the new oils are critical to turbo life.If you like, you can add a small oil accumulator, which after shut down, will bleedoil into the turbo bearings for a minute or so, thereby allowing you to shutthe engine down immediately after a hot run without turbo bearing damage.--------Tom KreinerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________
