Pietenpol-List: "Broad" head dates- new from IL.

I considered using the VW-TDI diesel engine for a Pietenpol. This is a turbocharged diesel having peak torque at 1850 rpm. Puts out 90 HP fromthe factory, about 116 HP as I have tuned. Can hook up a laptop computerto it for you computer guys out there. I don't know the weight of the engine. It is liquid cooled, but efficient. Whenidling the coolant temperature will drop, and it actually has electric heatingelements in the coolant to provide "passenger comfort" in the winter. Translation:maybe a small radiator would be good enough.I have one of these engines in my current car, however the turbocharger recentlyfailed after 11 years and 210,000 miles. Not a scenario I'd want to face inthe air, but I believe there are warning signs now that I didn't know of before.Pictures here: https://picasaweb.google.com/Patrick.Ho ... ilure#I've already ordered a larger (more reliable?) turbocharger, with plans to getthis running again soon in my car. However if that doesn't work out (I'm thinking"bent rods" here), then I'll junk the car and consider doing a total rebuildon that engine if the block and crankshaft remain salvageable. Some obvious questions that I don't have answers for are (a) how much does theVW-TDI engine weigh in a flight configuration? (b) how do I attach a prop hubto that particular crankshaft? (c) do I need any kind of additional bearing onthe crank snout?, (d) what kind of prop would be used?, and (e) would I enjoyflying a Diesel Piet to the kind of airports that sell JetA....The idea of "homebuilding" - or I should say "homebrewing" - my own fuel is alsoappealing. Not saying that this is something that I'll realistically ever do, or even if itwould work. But I've got the engine and the skills (I think) to get me a goodway there, and it is one of those things I've been thinking about for a while. If I pursue this, the smart thing might be to prove it out in something likean airboat first.... The final proof would have to be by virtue of flying it. Lynn Rusch actually DIDit, whereas all I have is just an idea at this point. For what it's worth, I also have an old Mercedes diesel engine in another car. It's a 67 HP 4 cylinder. Seat of the pants experience tells me it's half aspowerful as the turbocharged VW, and my gut feeling is that my Mercedes engineis a lot heavier. I have no numbers to back that up though.- Patrick Hoyt--------Patrick Hoyt601XLb/CorvairN63PZ - 99.999% done....Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: "Broad" head dates- new from IL.

................and the best moment of all........... is at the end of the day......Scooter is finally getting his "free ride" in exchange for lugging the gas from town all day. Waldo is giving him the ride of his life, climbing in and out of the clouds to the background music of "The Great Waldo Pepper March"....and then you see Scooter reach down and hug his dog, to the delight of Waldo............................................................................ priceless________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: "Broad" head dates- new from IL.
