Hello, low 'n' slow fliers;Pat Panzera, editor of Contact! magazine, is considering an all-Piet issue of themagazine if we can assemble enough articles to fill an issue. I'm sure wecan. Contact! is somewhat engine-oriented and 100% technical content, and mythought is that the Air Camper has been powered by so many different engines thatit shouldn't be any problem at all getting some articles together for themagazine. I think the most exciting new Air Camper just about to hatch is ChrisRusch's Mitsubishi-powered airplane, and I'd like to feature that one in themagazine but there are numerous other innovative ones out there. Of courseDick Navratil's Rotec radial powered airplane is unique and would have plentyof technical details of interest in how he adapted the engine to the airframe. There are some recently-completed and completely authentic Ford-powered Pietsthat would be of interest to others as far as the details of the conversionand build nowadays vs. what the original Pietenpol conversion drawings suggested. We might even go back to some of the other one-off Piets such as the FordFiesta powered one that appeared back in the November 1980 issue of Sport Aviation.Which, by the way, does anybody have any information on? Is it stillaround?Put on your thinking caps and email me off-line if you think you can put togethera technical article related to Piets (and in particular, powerplants for them). The design will be 85 years old in 2014, so maybe we can get the issue togetherto celebrate that milestone early next year.--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: all-Piet issue of Contact!

How timely Oscar. This past weekend I flew in to Lubitz field near Toronto Ontario.Ed Lubitz retired as a pilot from my airline in 1999. He is an aerospaceengineer and designed a PSRU and other modifications for a Ford Escorte enginethat he flies behind in his Pietenpol. I was fascinated by the simplicity ofhis design and how nicely it cowls (similar in weight to the Model A so it canbe kept pretty close to the firewall). I wouldn't mind submitting an article about his design and whereabouts. He's agreat guy and good friend to aviation and the home builder. Scott; thanks a million! I'll post this reply to the list and not just to youindividually since the same general comment will apply no matter what the technicaltopic: by all means, assemble any information you can get on the LubitzEscort conversion! Write the piece, get photos, do the interview... and sendit along! No matter whether the "special" Piet issue becomes reality or not, this type of story is always of interest, and it sparks creative thinking. Runwith it!I'm also thinking that Greg Bacon/John Dilatush's "Mountain Piet" would be a primecandidate for write-up as well. I don't know of any other turbocharged SubaruAir Campers out there!--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Re: all-Piet issue of Contact!

I just wanted to share some pictures of the model I am having made. I am doingthis for inspiration, since it will be a few years before I have a finished plane.I have no connection to this company, except as a customer. It cost meabout $180 for a fairly large model (24 in wing). I just picked a picture of a plane I liked off the internet and sent the pictures. His link is customairmodels(at)gmail.comThe final product will be polished smooth, without the blemishes in the photo.--------Joe PringleAtlanta, GARead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ttachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/mode ... ___Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Re: all-Piet issue of Contact!

Jack;I think there is plenty of technical content to put together an article devotedto small Continental engines and how to get the most from them. I love theseengines and would love to see a story on building and modding them. With airplanes like Jon Sharp's "Nemesis" and Hoot Gibson's Cassutt, there is evidencethat these engines can be encouraged to put out a lot more than theirrated power with some judicious modification. Add things like the P-Mag and thereis plenty to explore.--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Mon, 15 Jul 2013 16:43:31 -0600Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: custom wooden model

Few are the trails leading to completed projects which are not crusted with driedblood, damp with tears, and salty from sweat. Rather than being jinxed, you'reexperiencing one of the things that makes a successful project an even morevaluable and memorable accomplishment. No pain, no gain.Put a butterfly bandage on the cut, be glad that it was a clean slice from a razorblade, and be careful next time. You know there will be a next time... therewould be no market for Band-Aids or first aid kits if there weren't "nexttimes" ;o)--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: all-Piet issue of Contact!

Paul; thanks for the comment. Of course William and "Wese" are invaluable resourceswhen it comes to the Corvair conversion, and I am in touch with both ofthem as the need arises. William and Grace are planning to publish a Piet-specificmanual with tips, tricks, and other valuable information. They love thePiet as much as we do.That said, I'll also mention that the focus of the Contact! articles will be onas broad a range of applications as I can round up for the issue, and I'm goingto try to have the magazine compliment William & Grace's publication, not duplicateit. We will absolutely, positively include a current example of a CorvairAir Camper, and may contrast it with Mr. Pietenpol's early Corvair conversionsusing the top shroud blower and mostly stock internal components. Thereis an excellent selection of current PietVairs... as well as others in the offing(Kevin Purtee's reincarnated "Fat Bottomed Girl" being one example). Itis good that there are so many targets of opportunity.--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________
