Re: 626 is getting an overhaul

I don't have any knowledge of putting a 'A' engine together, but I am interested in how your build progresses. I recently painted some certified engine parts using an Eastwood 2K paint, and wow, is that stuff serious! Seems to be a tough product.

Re: BPA Newsletter Ceasing Publication

Pat,

I am very sorry to hear this. I hope that the drop in membership is not reflective of the interest in our favorite little airplane. The Brodhead Pietenpol fly-in is the highlight of my summer and I am glad to hear that it will continue. I agree with the others, keep my dues as a donation ...

Aircamping

Got to do a little aircamping last week. Flew down to Byrd's adventure center for their "Byrds Backcountry Flight Festival" (mostly a STOL event) and then flew to Tulsa for the 64th annual bean dinner at Airmans Acres airport. 275 miles round trip and 4.4 hours. Nothing like the 1000+ mile trip to ...

Re: Brake pedals

Plus one on the toe brakes with the rudder bar. I copied Bill Rewey's plans for the toe brakes and they work well. My piet is a little over-braked, so I am always careful to keep the brake usage to an absolute minimum. I own and fly other airplanes with heel brakes and they feel completely natural ...

AN301 nails

I was looking around the other day for some official aircraft nails, the kind that aircraft spruce used to sell. They were steel nails, plated in brass to prevent corrosion, and coated in cement to help prevent them from backing out. From what I’ve found online, it seems these nails have been ...

Re: Ford Model A conversion

Thank you for the replies Richard. The radiator is a cheap foreign made job, but no leaks yet. It measures 14.5” wide x 16.5” tall x 2.75” deep.

Re: Ford Model A conversion

Update on this project. I know it's not a Pietenpol, but it has more in common with a Pietenpol than any other group. The engine is on the airframe, and running. It mostly uses the standard Pietenpol conversion that was already done, with a few modifications:
1. Side mounted water pump. Pump is from ...

Re: Pitot tube

I overthought this alot on my build, but it seems to have worked out well. I drilled a 3/8 hole in the leading edge, and epoxied in a 3/8 aluminum tube that is bent to go over the spar. I then threaded a piece of 1/4" brass tubing to thread in both ends. The aluminum tube is cut off flush with the ...

Re: Model A ignition harness

Perfect. Thanks for the help. I will order a lead and change out the ones that are too short. I am sure I will have more questions.
It has been challenging getting the Ford engine and all of the engine systems mounted in the Corben. The underslung radiator and tight cowling have created the main ...

Model A ignition harness

What is everyone using for an ignition harness with the model A? I have a slick 4201 mag mounted directly to end of the crank. The slick harness I have from a small continental comes up about 6" short. I am using standard REM 40E plugs.

Re: 0200 engine mount

Interesting. Continental definitely recommends a 3/8 bolt here. On my Piet with the O-200, the engine mount is built to the plans with a 7/16 bolt. The mount is extended 3”. Thinking I’m an idiot who built the airplane wrong, I went to check my Aeronca 11ac with an a65. Also uses a 7/16 bolt. Hmm ...

N825GR

Long time lurker here. First trip to Brodhead in 2008, haven't missed a year since.
Started building ribs in the 9th grade, took 15 years to finish.
My Pietenpol now has 2.7 hours on it, first flight 2/25/24. So far so good.
Powered by a fire breathing Continental O-200.
Location Fayetteville ...

Re: Ford Model A conversion

Richard,

Thanks for the info. The Corben did not come with the engine, it was originally built in the early 1970's and flown with a Chevy Vega engine. The engine was acquired by a man named Hendrix in Iowa from a Piet builder's estate. The plan is to do a recover and use the Ford A. I am currently ...

Re: Ford Model A conversion

Update, I found a model A engine, but still know very little about it. Supposedly, a "Brodhead guru" did the conversion 20+ years ago, and it has been stored in Arizona for most of that time before it found its way to Iowa and now Arkansas. It appears to have very little if any run time, the ...

Ford Model A conversion

Hello good people...

Finishing up a continental powered Air Camper and looking towards my next project. I have an older experimental airplane (not a Piet) that needs a Ford model A hanging on the front. Does anyone have a lead on a good used engine, or even a source of info other than the BHP ...
