Re: center section bracket rust prevention
Oscar and Ken, thanks for the additional info. I had not even thought about the covering and any associated interdependencies with the varnish. Would I be correct in assuming the difference in the price between the two are negligible WRT the price of the entire build. I would lean toward the Stewart...

Re: center section bracket rust prevention
Gents, thanks for the replies. i guess my next question(since i assumed i would be doing this much later and had time to research it) is are all varnishes(i.e. something i find at a big box store) the same? If so i will head to the BORG tomorrow.

center section bracket rust prevention
Evening folks, had a lot of time to work on the plane in the past year. Having said that I am at the point that I am putting the center section together and had a thought that stopped me from proceeding on the day I was planning to glue the ribs onto it. Even though I painted the metal brackets with...

Thanks for the replies. i think i will extend a couple inches and install a flop, assuming that is the part of the trailing edge that hinges up.

Cabanes
Anybody lengthened or know of anybody who lengthened the cabanes for ease of entry/exit? Now that I have finished my ribs I am working on the center section. Getting in and out of the fuselage was easy without the center section attached but with a mock-up of the center section getting in and out ha...

Re: Wing Rib Jig
Oscar, thanks again for the reply. I am onto rib #5 today. I spent a few hours on the first rib getting the truss members exact and then used them as the templates to mark future truss members before cutting. I then use a shooting board marked with the exact angle i want for each cut. This has worke...

Re: Wing Rib Jig
Oscar, thanks for the reply and the drawing this helps a lot. If there are lots of variations I will just use the full size template I purchased with the plans. I like to keep things simple.

Wing Rib Jig
Before asking my question, I would just like to thank the group here for the help that has been provided in the past. I do not want to think what I would have sitting in my basement without that help. I am embarking on the next phase of my build which will be the wing ribs, and like the previous end...

Rick, unable to see pics, could be on my end though, the older i get the less i know(and wanna know) about electronics and computers, explains my choice in experimental aircraft.

Looking forward to see the replies John. I have the Hstab attached but have not even looked at the Tdeck so now I am aware I might have some figurin to do.

Re: Spar thickness
Thanks Rick, I need some motivation to get back to the basement and do some more work on the plane and getting some hours on the airframe will do it.

Copy all, thanks. I am a hand tool wood worker so in my mind i was seeing myself doing lots of hand planing to get the ribs onto the spars.

Re: Spar thickness
Taildrags, thanks for the reply, i don’t have a degree in aero so really cannot run any numbers to tell what the minimum thickness would need to be. That being said my “spidey sense” indicated that it should be fine but its always good to run ones ideas across someone else to make sure they are not ...

Spar thickness
All, I know I will get a lot of varied responses on this one. I ordered some wood to build the wings and have been informed that the wood that has been found for the spars is just a shade(1/32-1/16th of an inch) under 1 inch thick. I am away from home for work but am pretty sure i remember the plans...

Thanks for all the input, I don’t feel as bad as I did but only somewhat. It’s a good lesson for the rest of the build.

epoxy failure
Has anyone ever had T88 epoxy fail? I ask because yesterday when i stepped into my pietenpol for the first time to sit down i heard a pop and crackle. Upon closer inspection after getting out it appears that a section of about 3 inches of the floor came unglued from the cross strut that is holding u...

4130 vs 1020
Gents, more seemingly simple questions here. The plans seem to call for a lot of 1020 steel for the metal parts of the plane(i.e. landing gear, cables, fittings,...) but it appears that now folks are using 4130. While I understand that material science has progressed a lot since the 1930s, is there ...

Steam Bending Longerons
All, I have started building the fuselage and originally planned(because I assumed it was obvious) to steam bend the longerons. I could not find anything in the book that came with the plans about steam bending the longerons just the cap strips. After I built the fuselage side jig I found that the b...

washington dc pietenpols
Hello All I have narrowed down the homebuilt aircraft i would like to build to two candidates and the pietenpol air camper is one of them. That being said before making a decision I would like to get up close and personal with one and hopefully get a flight and see how it rides. Are there any owners...
